American Style is an international collaboration between the godfather of all gypsy brewers, Mikkeller, and one of the new stars of the US tenant brewing scene, Prairie Artisan Ales. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Chase Healey journeyed to Flanders to brew this twist on an American-style IPA with Dirk Naudts at De Proefbrouwerij . Predictably, it’s loaded with West Coast hops. What you might not have guessed, though, is that it was fermented exclusively with a special strain of Brettanomyces claussenii that’s light on the funkiness, but really aromatic. It leaves behind an astoundingly well attenuated IPA, which means it’s good for drinkin’. A serious amount of West Coast hops are added to the whirlpool and as dry hops to compliment the tropical notes from the Brett.

Solid. Still thrown a little by Prairie's flavor profiles, but I think that's a good thing. Always something surprising and unexpected.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow with big fluffy head. Aromas of tropical fruits, grass, and some brett funk. Flavors are all tropical, grassy, yeasty, with some lingering funk.

Cap says 9/4/2017. I bought this from a bottle shop that opened May 2014 on July 8, 2015. I enjoyed it in a Hopslam tulip/snifter. This is my first experience with Brett. I drank this for IPA day but this is far from the beer I was expecting. This was similar to the experience I had drinking Jolly Pumpkin Weizen Bam Biere expecting a wheat and getting a sour. This is sour. Look - Hazy but no sediment mango yellow. Thick white head. I started with an aggressive pour then poured down the side and still got two fingers. It had thick bubbles and died quickly. Little to no lacing. Smell - Swirled I can pick up a faint hint of dank grapefruit and pineapple. It is mainly sour and sweet. There is grass. Taste - Saison. It tastes like a saison. Grass, sweet, and sour. I get little to no pine and citrus. Vanilla in the after after taste (I am R Kelly). Feel - Very carbonated. Medium mouthfeel. Little hop tingle on tongue. Overall - Reading up on Brett I know it is expected to be a saison or flanders. I was about to rip it a new one for the style points. Is this a beer I want to drink on IPA day, no. Is it an okay beer, yes. I won’t buy it again. As it warmed the only difference was more head and more lacing.

Pours cloudy medium gold with three fingers (and growing) of rocky light tan head, heavy lacing. (4/5) Nose is pithy citrus, brett funk, tropical fruit, pale grainy malt. (8/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderately strong bitter, strong tart. (8/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, dry funky finish. (4/5) That’s a fairly unique A/IPA - definitely dominated by the brett, but still retaining a strong hop character. I’ve had Belgian IPA’s before, and this shares a lot of the characteristics of that style, but the brett is definitely the joker in the deck. In fact, the first thing I thought of when I cracked it, was that it smelled like a lambic or a gueuze. Bit of a beast, but lots of fun. The only other beer I can think of that took the “brett inoculated IPA” route is Stone Enjoy After - but that’s gonna be my Boxing Day present to myself this year, so I’ll have to get back to y’all with a comparison on that. Appearance: pours almost all head, the head is a darker beige color, the beer is a slightly darker than average gold color, the head settles into a very thick dense layer Aroma: strong lemon, orange citrus, spice, potpourri, smells good Taste: very strong bitterness, alcohol warmth on the finish, citrus, malt really gets out of the way, not sweet, spicy Palate: average carbonation, bitter and light alcohol aftertaste, medium mouthfeel Overall: a lot to like about this beer, has a strong bitterness backed up by a spice behind it, alcohol is well hidden, gets more funky as it warms and you get to the bottom of the bottle ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a nice glowing amber-orange with a small white head. Aroma is sweet mango and tangerine. Taste is pineapple, tangerine and mango in that order giving away to light grainy malts with a lingering tang from the hops. Really good in a subtle exotic way.

Bottle. Hazy gold with orange tints and a thin white head. Lots of fruit. Grapefruit, peach, blueberry and mango. Brett shows up in the background, with some seltzer and rainwater type things going on. Ok but I don’t love the aftertaste.
