shadey (1343), Rochester, New York, USA Feb 1, 2008 750 Bottle. Poured into a Duvel tulip, the color is dark like a stout. The head is a dark mocha tan, like a stout as well. The aroma is also stout-like, with roasted malts and some chocolate. The aromas are very well blended and smooth. There is no bitter edge like a stout or porter. Its gentle in the nose and on the tongue. The spiciness is what differentiates it as Belgian, but just barely. I don’t know that I would identify this as Belgian in a blind tasting. The body is exceptionally smooth and silky. The alcohol is well-hidden. It’s a very tasty beer, that goes well with the holiday season.
Pompey (32), Longmont, Colorado, USA Sep 22, 2008 Lightly laced with an obsidian black pour. Not too carbonated, just right. A blast of malt in the aroma. Dark fruits are forward in the palate with a wonderful dark malt and yeast base. Alcohol nicely hidden. It is a barrage of spices and dark fruits including dates and figs with cocoa and molasses and treacle. What fun! The finish also has some finesse with a touch of honey and vanilla. Really impressive. Mikkeller strikes again. Goodgrief (1055), Middletown, Delaware, USA Sep 13, 2008 Shared the bottle with a friend who likes his stouts and wanted something dark. "Well, this is a quad, so it probably won’t have coffee or chocolate in it." Ironically, I was wrong. Dark brown pour, nice pillowy head and decent lacing. A winelike aroma was detectable. The flavor was lots of molasses and dark fruit figgy/plum fruit (which I’m not overly fond of), but a surprisingly roasty mocha-like finish. Not really creamy or rich and a little acidic. Better as it warmed, but still not something I’ll be rushing out for again. BigMilly8 (373), Holiday, Florida, USA Sep 7, 2008 From bottle : Pours a dark color, with a big 2 fingers of light brown head, and sticky lacing all over the glass. A nice spicey, sweet, dark fruit aroma. Taste isnt as spicey as the smell, but it does have some spicey bit, dark fruits, prunes. Very nice taste. Medium to thin body, with a smooth feel all the way through. Aftertaste is sweet, and lingers. Cant catch any alcohol. Nice belgian. Enjoyit (1108), Vadum, Denmark Aug 30, 2008 Thanks to Mikkel himself. Black of color with a nice beige head.An aroma with notes of port, spice, prunes, dark fruits and weak sweets.
