Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium.

Mikkeller Christmas beer anno 2008. Santa’s Little Helper is a dark, strong Belgian ale, lightly spiced with sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa. This year’s version is recognized by less sweetness than the 2007 version, a fresh hop bite, balanced by the sweetness from the coriander and orange peel and a big bold body. Enjoy now or keep it in the cellar for many years to come.
Ingredients : Water, malt (pale, special-B and chocolate), flaked wheat, dark candy syrup, dark cassonade, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer, styrian goldings and simcoe), spices (sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa) and yeast.

Bottle shared at Tupalev’s, thanks Jeff. Pours a colour about 10 times darker than I was expecting, almost black with a small beige head. Aroma is a medley of spices and whatnot but nothing too decernable. Flavour makes up for that, some butterscotch which is nice, candy cane, hops, cinnamon, dryness on top of some fruity esters and caramel. Very interesting but I have it written down that I felt it wasn’t complex enough, too simple. I’m also not buying the claim of 11%. Nevertheless it is quite a tasty beer. I’m pretty glad I didn’t have to pay $15 just for one bottle though, it’s not really worth quite that much IMHO.

Pitch black pour with a nice sized brown head with nice lacing. Can smell orange, cocoa powder, ans spice in the nose. Tastes of chocolate malt, a touch of hops, sticky molasses and a spice almost like cumin. Heavy alcohol presence, like drinking a cognac. Sticky mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Worth a try, interesting beer, a lot of different flavor profiles that seem to segregate themselves from each other

Pours very dark brown with a good sized rocky tan head. The aroma has a nice blend between Belgian malt and cocoa ~ somewhat sweet and quite creamy. Medium body with semi-soft carbonation. The flavor starts with earthy yeast and very dark malt without seeming roasted and an odd spiciness with a mild hint of cocoa. The finish has phenolic spice and earthy Belgian yeast and malt. This is decent, but not up to what I expected.

Pours an opaque dark brown with an everlasting creamy head. The aroma is cocoa and nuts (somewhere between hazelnuts and pecans). There is a faint bit of brown sugar and dark fruit as well. This isn’t mind blowing, but it’s pretty darn tasty.

2008-12-19. Dark brown body with a modest tan head. Mildly alcoholic aroma, spice and something I can not quite place. Light floral and herbal notes. (7+) Flavour is modestly sweet overall, herbal spice character is more restrained than in the aroma. (To its benefit in my opinion.) Pleasant. Touch of bitterness at the back of the throat is sharp on some sips. (7+) Smooth average to medium bodied palate. (3+) Enjoyable but I expect the herbal character would become a bit much in quantity. Bottle shared by Tupalev

(Bottle at Pikkulintu on 2008-11-27 - shared with Mave, thanks) Deep dark brown. Small little bit tan coloured head. Alcohol, malts and liquorice in nose. Full bodied palate with medium carbonation. Malts, alchol, roastedness, sweetness, some raisin, liquorice flavours, chocolate and light bitterness in taste. Chocolate and bitterness in aftertaste.

Bottle. Poured jet black with a thin tan head. Light nose, yeasty, with a good hint of alcohol. A solid belgian style beer, somewhat spicy with raw flavors.Roasted malts and cocoa are evident. Pretty aggressively carbonated. Finish is bitter, with an alcohol bite.
