Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium.

Mikkeller Christmas beer anno 2008. Santa’s Little Helper is a dark, strong Belgian ale, lightly spiced with sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa. This year’s version is recognized by less sweetness than the 2007 version, a fresh hop bite, balanced by the sweetness from the coriander and orange peel and a big bold body. Enjoy now or keep it in the cellar for many years to come.
Ingredients : Water, malt (pale, special-B and chocolate), flaked wheat, dark candy syrup, dark cassonade, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer, styrian goldings and simcoe), spices (sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa) and yeast.

Bottle. Dark brown with brown head. Aroma of chocolate, malts and tarr. Taste dark malts and alcohol, much like a stout. I didn´t find much belgian strong ale in it, still fine.

Bottled. Pours out in an opaque dark brown colour with a white rich head. Rich and warming aroma of figs, coriander, fudge, pepper and yeast. Full-bodied with yeasty, spicy and rather crisp notes of coriander, anise, nutmeg, sweet licorice and fudge. Long warming spicy finish of anise, milky chocolate and coriander. Felt a bit simplistic and un-inspired compared to last years versions. Still tasty.

Corked bottle. Deep dark brown color, almost opague with a big creamy head. Coreander, chocolate, pepper, licorice and caramel in the aroma. Full bodied, malty sweet spicy flavor with coreander, nutmeg, chocolate, caramel and pepper. The alcohol is there, but not too abundant. Too spicy for my taste, but this is a well made beer.

Bottle sampled at Chancey Smith’s in London, ON- Very dark brown, almost black. Pours a frothy mocha cap. Nice sticky lace. Nose is belgian candy sugars, dark pit fruits, perfume, spices, some alcohol and a bit of yeasty mint. Tastes quite sweet and minty. Dark fruit, cotton candy, milk chocolate, some woody earthy coffee, with a sharp, dry hop profile making it seem a bit less sweet. Creamy on the palate, perhaps a bit too heated for mass consumption, but overall quite well done. Thanks for getting in this one Milos!

Drunk to celebrate my rating number 12,400. A pitch black beer with a huge dark brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of alcohol as well as lighter notes of ginger, coriander, coffee, and cocoa. The flavor is sweet and very roasted and spicy - especially coriander, but also notes of alcohol and lighter notes of cocoa, leading to a dry cocoa and roasted finish. The alcohol is felt both on the tongue and palate, and lingers for a long time.

Bottle (750ml). Shared by blankboy with me, biegaman and garthicus. Deep ruby-brown pour, clear, solid frothy tan lasting head. Fruity aroma, slight bitter dry cocoa and some spruce/pine resin. Taste - quite strong alcohol, light roast malt, dry spiciness, citrus zest, baker’s chocolate bitterness - not terribly well blended. Surprisingly not at all heavy-bodied, nice and lively mouthfeel, quite spicy and boozy through the finish - very warming indeed! Might be better with some cellaring.

Thanks to Blankboy, shared with HogTownHarry and I, thanks a bunch Paul. Appearance: Deep black with a nice large tan head. Aroma: Hoppy with malt and chocolate, some spices, coriander and pepper, pumpkin too. Quite a lot going on! Flavour: Chocolate, alcohol, very rich, orange(?), nicely carbonated, quite a hoppy bitter finish. Lovely.

Bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours black with a light brown head. The nose is subtley sour and grainy. Toffee, roasted almonds, cashews, toast, and molasses dominate the flavor. Finishes with notes of spiced apple. Soft carbonation and medium/full body. Good beer.
