Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium.

Mikkeller Christmas beer anno 2008. Santa’s Little Helper is a dark, strong Belgian ale, lightly spiced with sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa. This year’s version is recognized by less sweetness than the 2007 version, a fresh hop bite, balanced by the sweetness from the coriander and orange peel and a big bold body. Enjoy now or keep it in the cellar for many years to come.
Ingredients : Water, malt (pale, special-B and chocolate), flaked wheat, dark candy syrup, dark cassonade, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer, styrian goldings and simcoe), spices (sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa) and yeast.

Pours dark brown/black, with a small frothy light brown head. Smells of dark nutty malts, light roast, and a bit of that cocoa powder. the flavor is pretty rich, lots of cocoa and spices, to go along with the malty roast and molasses. Light alcohol presence, masked quite proficiently. A little chalky, oaky flavor comes throgh in the finish. pretty interesting and solid brew here.

Bottle. Coffee, maple syrup, Starbuck’s coffee liquor, raspberry paste, light peppermint, cookie dough, dark fruits. Taste-pecans, unsweet chocolate powder, berries, a really great strain of yeast, medium to high sweetness, unsweet Fig Newtons, black berries. Damn good.

Poured from a 750ml corked and caged bottle and served in a tulip. This beer poured a muddy dark brown with a thin head of lasting tan foam. A small amount of spotty, slippery lace was left behind. The aroma included orange peel, cinammon, chocolate, dark fruits, and molasses. The flavor consisted of moderately spiced chocolate, caramel, molasses, and a lasting note of dried bittersweet orange peel. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and had light, moderately crisp carbonation. Pretty decent, but the orange peel and spices tend to wear on the palate towards the bottom of the glass.

Bottle: The aroma has lots of chocolate with moderate spice, fruit, and light smoke. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a moderate beige head that lasts a minute or so. The flavor has lots of chocolate up front with some light roastiness in the background. The finish is moderately spicy with some light orange peel. Medium-full bodied with soft carbonation.

bottle at Ft Wayne locals tasting - Pours very dark brown with a thin light tan head. The aroma includes spices, dark fruit, malts, and some alcohol. The flavor is an enjoyable blend of sweet malt, spice - especially cinnamon - and dark fruit that leads into a pleasantly bitter finish to a full bodied brew. The aroma isn’t quite what it could be but the flavor and overall impression really tie it all together. Superb.
