Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium.

Mikkeller Christmas beer anno 2008. Santa’s Little Helper is a dark, strong Belgian ale, lightly spiced with sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa. This year’s version is recognized by less sweetness than the 2007 version, a fresh hop bite, balanced by the sweetness from the coriander and orange peel and a big bold body. Enjoy now or keep it in the cellar for many years to come.
Ingredients : Water, malt (pale, special-B and chocolate), flaked wheat, dark candy syrup, dark cassonade, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer, styrian goldings and simcoe), spices (sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa) and yeast.

Bottled. Pours out in an opaque dark brown colour with a white rich head. Rich and warming aroma of figs, coriander, fudge, pepper and yeast. Full-bodied with yeasty, spicy and rather crisp notes of coriander, anise, nutmeg, sweet licorice and fudge. Long warming spicy finish of anise, milky chocolate and coriander. Felt a bit simplistic and un-inspired compared to last years versions. Still tasty.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a small, off-white head that goes and a murky dark brown body. Some lacing. Aroma of prunes, chocolate, raisins, rum, and plums. Taste is alcohol, prunes, spices, chocolate, nuts and a burnt taste. Somewhat vinous. Warming. A bit thin on the mouth, light carbonation.

Bottle. Dark brown with decent, dreamy beige head. Sweet, spicy aroma, quite a bit of licorice, but also orange caramel and alcohol. Flavours are even more spicy with a bitter edge, a lot alcohol, somewhat less harmonic than indicated by the nose.

750, corked, baled, and foiled. Thanks, Maria! Pours essentially jet black with a brief, creamy, beautiful tan head that settles quickly to bits of film, foam, and lace. Lovely rich chocolate, spice, roast, and dust on the nose. Creamy medium body, understated carb, and all the aromatics back in flavorful form on the mid-palate. Nicely done. Tasty beer.

Bottle @ Volo. Nose is very malty, spicy and some yeast is noted. Deep brown with a small toffee head. Flavour is a big roasted malt, some pitfruit, and a mild spice too. Medium bodied, very well balanced, alcohol is married with all the other good tastes and textures of this offering, great mouthfeel. Terrific!

Draught at Capone’s: Pungent aroma of fruit, hops, mango, orange, coriander, and some cocoa. Poured very dark brown in color with a large, creamy, dense, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Opaque. Slightly sparkling. Very good lacing. Flavor is medium bitter and not at all sweet. Tastes of hops, light fruit, resin, pine, light cocoa, and light grapefruit. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Bitter hop finish is dry.
