COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium.

Mikkeller Christmas beer anno 2008. Santa’s Little Helper is a dark, strong Belgian ale, lightly spiced with sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa. This year’s version is recognized by less sweetness than the 2007 version, a fresh hop bite, balanced by the sweetness from the coriander and orange peel and a big bold body. Enjoy now or keep it in the cellar for many years to come.
Ingredients : Water, malt (pale, special-B and chocolate), flaked wheat, dark candy syrup, dark cassonade, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer, styrian goldings and simcoe), spices (sweet orange peel, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cocoa) and yeast.

Drank this in 2014. Nice flavor, nice aroma, but I suspect this might be past its prime. It’s weirdly watery. Oh, sure, I get plenty of orange peel and cocoa, but it’s off. I thought you could age this? Is it me? If I need to delete this, let me know...

"this is simply a great beer and put some other worthy belgans to shame. dark, with an aroma full of pine, half from the hops, half from the spices. quite lively, with just a hint of cocoa under the big pine hop and sugary sweet flavor. smooth full body, lasting finish. one of Mikkeller’s best? 2009 up to the task as well."

Opaque black brown beer, a few bubbles instead of a head. Smooth palate, low carbonation. Smooth lactose dark malt. Touch of wood with a mild whisky - bourbon. A little fruit - well buried. Mild warmth in the finish. Simple but effective!

Bottle sitting my the "cellar" since purchase and served in my Iechyd Da snifter: pours jet black with absolutely no head nor carbonation (but I knew that already). The aroma has massive anise, prune and marzipan along with moderate roast, chocolate, rye bread, corriander and and herbal hops. The citric zest notes have long faded away and the cinnamon has melded into the malts. Slight cardboardy and "pickle" note as well. The taste is oxidized malts and moderate spicing... and I LIKE IT! The crash of opposing flavors that were in this beer when fresh have gone bye-bye. Now it has taken on the character of a nicely aged Imperial Stout versus a muddled Dark Belgian of it’s youth. Too bad this is not carbonated or the score would have been much much higher.

750ml bottle. Pours a dark brown color with no head. Aroma of dark toffee malts, citrus and spices. The taste is nutmeg, clove, nuts, other spices, citrus, toffee malts. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Comes across as very flat, despite the promise it can age for many years.
