3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle as part of the spoils from my recent Portland trip (Belmont Station). The shelves were thick with highly-rated Mikkeller beers that I have yet to try, but I’m particularly fond of brandy/cognac barrel aging and so this seemed a good bet.
Really good-looking pour into my Gulden Draak tulip, cloudy deep brown with a lovely fine tan head. Aroma of roast coffee, boozy cognac, and sweet Christmas cake spices. Ample wood.
The flavor is not over the top in intensity -- this is no pannepot despite some similarities in craft -- and yet the flavor impresses: gently sweet cola, deeply roasty but never ashy, prominent cognac brings both a oaken woodiness and a rich vinous element to the whole. Five-alive (remember that?). All of the elements of an almond joy candybar: almonds, coconut, chocolate -- but that descriptor implies cheap and mass-produced. This is the opposite. Others’ description of a creamy mouthfeel is right on. This isn’t thick nor is it hot, but merely enjoyable on the tongue.
Though it is not a thirst quencher this is relatively easy-drinking beer for the ABV, and would make a fine desert. It does enough on the flavor end to merit it’s high 10.9%. Unlike a few others in this category, though, one gets palate fatigue rather than increasingly thirsty as one works through a bottle. Based on the first sip I could go up to 4.0 on this one but based on all 12.7 oz, I’m going to let the score fall where it does.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Neddroslet. Et mesterbryg!

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours very dark brown, essentially black. Khaki head, smallish though larger than expected for the size, style, barrel aging, etc. Bubbles mostly die away after a few moments. Aroma is a mix of cocoa, cola, caramel, spice, and cognac barrel. It smells sweet and warm, like a warm slice of chocolate cake with a snifter of cognac. Everything comes together very nicely. The spice is a holiday-ish mix of nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. It starts out with cola and honey sweetness. Unsweetened cocoa and holiday spice bring some depth to sweetness, while cognac and oak reign in the possibility of cloying sugariness. Very round flavor. Lots of stuff going on. The cognac barrel and chocolate combination is particularly nice. Mouthfeel is full and slick but a little fizzy at first. Tasty beer. I liked this one a lot more than expected. It tastes like a boozy Christmas dessert. I’m not normally a big fan of spiced Christmas beers, but Mikkeller did an excellent job, here.
