The pour is a very dark brown color with a full, pale tan, foamy head which settles to a thick, rocky foam and leaves decent Belgian lace. The nose is a bit off (may be infected), lactic, some floral, grass, burnt toast, bitter chocolate, and slight toffee. The flavor is similar with lactic still, burnt toast, sweet toffee, dark chocolate, faint apple skins, light cinnamon, and floral. The palate is medium to full, silky smooth, soft to lively, and round. The beer finishes mostly sweet with toffee, dark chocolate, some cinnamon, and toast and roast notes left on the tongue. A fairly disappointing beer from a series I look forward to every year. I’m not sure if the beer was infected but the nose sure seemed that way. The biggest positives were the incredible drinkability for the ABV and the amazing palate for the style. Decent but not as good as the past years.

Bottle at Tasting, Seattle. Deep malty brown, thick tan foam. Boozy, malt, amber, acidic copper, amber malt, molasses. Nice.

Bottle, along with the 2011. Not nearly as mellow as the ’11, this one retains more spice and more distinct candi notes. Brown sugar, spices. Booze remains a bit more, a touch overwhelming, but not bad. Just drink this stuff fresh, or maybe one year - no more.

Hammy78 (828) - Dundas, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 24, 2014
Bottle shared with my brother in-law. Pours an opaque, good carb, a little sediment, off white khaki head that’s about a finger high that dies down to a half a finger, a fare amount of lacing left behind. Smells like a typical Christmas spice. Sweet and malty. Tastes sweet, malty, bitter, spicy, a bit hot, I also get a touch of candy cane? Great stuff.

Darkish brown with virtually no head. Aroma is raisins, dates, belgian yeast, honey, plum, xmas spices. Medium-full bodied, slightly sweet on the palate with a boozy finish. Taste is dates, raisins, caramel, belgian yeast.

750ml bottle @ Varjopikkujoulut

Pours dark brown with a smooth head. Aroma of ripe fruits, syrup, candi sugar, some roastiness and orange peel. Taste is smooth, sweetish and syrupy with some orange peel, syrup, ripe fruits and hints of roastiness. Finish is sweetish, slightly roasty and fruity with some syrup and toffee. Quite interesting, feels a bit more fruity than the other versions.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black colour with a small head. Aroma of sweet maltiness, grass, some herbal notes and orange peel. Flavour of salty licorice, strong orange peel notes, coriander, metallic notes, chocolate malts and some bitterness. Medium bodied and a dry spicy finish. Probably the fruitiest SLH so far.

Aroma has oranges and some licorice. Flavour has licorice, some alcohol, ash, tobacco and orange. Also some smoky whisky tones even though this is not a BA beer. Pleasant.
