Vestergaard (1577) - Aarhus C, DENMARK - JUN 5, 2016
On tap at Mikkeller Bar Aarhus. Pours a clear dark brown with a small off white head. Aroma has toasted, roasted and slight caramel malts, some fruity hops, light chocolate, but despite having lots of speciality malts, it’s not super roasty. Taste has a light hint of smoke, chocolaty dryness, pretty sweet and light at the same time, light roasty and hoppy bitterness. Pretty decent actually! Average carbonation and a rather light body.

6%ABV. Schwarzbier. Tapped out black brown. 36ºSRM. Nose has aged medicinal notes, like a jäger shot. There are dried plums like ume, with a dry ginseng like finish in the nose. Sweet and smoky like molasses or caramel. Black honey. Dates and stone fruit in the nose. There is a brief chemical heft to the nose that suggests liniment. Nose also has some nice wet humid funk at the end. Mouthfeel is watery. Palate is malty and medicinal, with black bread, dark roasted malt. There is a dry abruptness to the palate that is more what you’d get from a stout. There is bunch of charcoal and an old world hoppy bitter. Finish is old world hop bitter. You don’t just get that degree of bitter from deeply roasted malt.

Malty aroma, roasty, caramel, coffee. Pours dark brown with a sensational rocky head. Umami and bitter coffee and chocolate flavour. The coffee lingers. Full bodied, oily. Bitter finish. I am enjoying this.
