2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
My bottle label is some kind of abstract shades of brown as opposed to the image shown here, but apparently itís the same inside. I should note that I think Mikkeller is an over-hyped, over-priced POS...at least in my experiences. However, I really like the idea of their single hop taste test with 19 hop varieties. So, letís taste armadillo hops.
Aroma is, well...apparently what amarillo hops smell like, very piny. Appearance is a muddled brownish orange with sediment. Large head quickly dissipates. Taste is woody, chalky, and gamey if that makes sense to you. If this is a good representation of amarillo hops, I can cross them off my like list. Does this make the beer bad? Well, yes and no. Bad to me, because I apparently donít care for amarillo hops. And since I use this site as a diary for ME and MY beer tastes...sorry Mikkeller, you get yet another bad check from me. However, I applaud your series idea and only wish the other 18 were available and damn it to hell wish they werenít $9 a sample.

330ml Bottle. Pours a deep, cloudy orange colour with a hint of amber. Head is thin and off white, which dissipates quickly, excellent lacing. Strong citrus aroma, with strong notes of pine, peach and grapefruit. Hints of grass with an earthy character. Initial pine flavour with a smooth, caramel malt sweetness and notes of tropical fruit. Medium body. Moves into lots of citrus with a dry, bitter finish. Excellent beer.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a clear orangish amber with a big white head that dissipates quickly but leaves lots of lacing down the glass. Aroma of pine needles, resin, grapefruit, sweet pale malts and some soft floral esthers in the background. Taste is pine, resin, bitter grapefruit balanced well with caramel tasting malts. Nice dry finish and well balanced ipa that shows the Amarillo off nicely.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very piney aroma. Ditto for taste. Almost a whiskey-like aroma/taste not in a boozy way but deep and bitter. Not just bitterness, bit of caramely taste too. More interesting than good maybe. Not as sweet/bright as the Amarillo de molen, bit more subdued, unfortunately.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours intense deep amber with rich off-white top, light to medium lasing. Aroma - sweet, caramel with pine. Indeed IPA cause malt-caramel profile is only background for hops bitter to shine. Medium body, medium thick, watery texture, dry finish, pleasant, lasting bitter aftertaste.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

Bottle from saveur-biere.com. Amber clear body with massive, stable, rocky, white head, that leaves a lot of lacing. Great, typical amarillo aroma of tropical fruits and flowers, also sugar, malt and some grass. Taste is sweet, with sugar, grapefruit, citrus, some grassy notes. Medium body, with a medium bitter, citric finish. Very good, refreshing, nice aromas, but there are even some better Amarillo IPAs.
