Keg at Mikkeller & Friends. Copper with thin white crown. Lots of juicy citrus, herbal notes, mandarin and sweet caramel in the aroma. Taste gives juicy citrus and light tropical fruit, very sweet caramel and some herbal notes. Bit too sweet and sticky for me. Decent flavour and good strong bitter whack, but not the right malt body to showcase how good Citra can be. The Kernel's Citra IPA is the perfect example of how to do it - no bloody sticky caramel!

Pours almost copper. Creamy, pine, tropical fruits. Expected more from a citra single hop.

Clear orange with a good foamy off-white head. Aroma is skunky, pine, lemon citrus hops. Flavour is sweet with a decent bitterness and a moderate bitter finish. Texture is fairly thick and slick. Good beer.

Bottle at home. Pours a clear amber with a medium off-white head. Low sweetness, some bitterness. Lots of citric hops aromas. Some aromas of plant sap and resin. Also tiny hints of soap and alcohol. Medium bodied. Medium to high carbonation. Bitter finish.

In short: A muddy yeasty fruity amber IPA lacking in many departments. Lame.
How: Bottle 330ml, from a new batch that landed in Vermont and consumed a few days after it hit the shelves, however fresh a Mikkeller IPA can be in Vermont.
The look: Muddy amber body topped by a medium beige head with mediu retention.
In long: Nose is phenolic, some tropical fruits, other yeasty fruit esters, quite a bit soapy and even perfumy (rose water). This is far from what I’ve been used from Citra IPAs that are legions in North-America. Taste is far from clean and crisp. Very yeasty and with grainy toasted cereals, like croutons in a yeast soup. Fruity flavors are like breakfast juice made from extract of citrus fruits and apples. Some resin, green plants, a medicine round-up the flavor spectrum. Full body but strangely lacking malt presence, just a thick yeasty body with the sweetness feeling more like fruit concentrate than usual cereals sweetness. An overall lack of freshness in the character of the beer although this batch being was freshly delivered. Mild bitterness with a finish that adds lemony citric notes. Medium carbonation and muddy mouthfeel. Very lame, I hope this was a bad batch, I’m rarely disappointed by a Mikkeller beer like I was by this one. Just another beer rating for me, my 5000+ ratings are my main accomplishment in my life, I feel like my contribution to this world we live in is as remarkable as the contribution of the letter ‘w’ in the word ‘answer’.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Darkish amber big creamy head. Moderate distinctive citra nose yellow fruit and a touch of cheese. More carbonated on the palate than i’d expected, slightly foamy in the mouth with mildly oily finish. Boozier than i’d hoped for too, doesn’t quite do it on the hop kick either although distinctly bitter on the end. Overall a bit of a disappointment from one of my favourite brewers, and nowhere near touching The Kernel’s.

On tap at La Bona Pinta in Barcelona. Pours a hazed, dull copper colored body with an inch thick, dense and creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is sweeter caramels with some bread and a good amount of juicy Citra hops giving off a nice citrus and a light tropical fruit. Flavor is similar. Lightly spiced citruses up front with some tropical fruits and a sweeter, bready caramel malt backing. Finishes dry and moderately bitter with a good amount of orange citruses and a balanced, sweeter caramel. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium, smooth body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid single hop IPA. On the sweeter side, but well balanced with plenty of fruity hops. Good beer.
