3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Strangeways, Dallas, TX. Pours with a black hued body and a tan head. Aromas are of chocolate, roast, nutty, rich milk chocolate, low esters, medium bready. Very low hop aroma for a black IPA. Flavors are roasty with chocolate, milk chocolate, leather, nutty, dark fruits. Not a huge amount of hops. Tastes like a moderately bitter American Stout. Medium carbonation, some dryness but a fuller body.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark chocolate color, sediment present. head is thick, very long lasting and creamy. Excellent lacing. Aroma is strong herbs, pine, resi, grapefruit but also licorice, chocolate and coffee. Body is average strong, creamy and thick; finish is bitter but not so much as in a regular IPA. Taste is smooth bitter, combined with licorice and cocoa. Complex, deep and amazingly balanced. Just what an black IPA should be.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A completely black beer with a medium head. Eyes closed, I could mistake it for an IPA with the typical floral hops aromas. The taste has a lot of roasted malts resembling a porter. The mouthfeel is solid and there’s enough of bitter and aromatic hops in the blend.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A solid strong hop aroma, with a strong roasty malt as well. This is quite heavy, almost stoutish, with a chewy aftertaste. Some very bitter fruitiness as well. Very good, but hard to give a detailed opinion.

Bottle at blue monk, dark pour, minor floaters. Roasty, medium bitterness. Medium mouthfeel. A tad old but decent.

2.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottle. Large tan head sits a top a black/dark brown murk. Floral, medicinal, pine and some roasted malt all in the aroma. Strong bitter flavour which is a bit vegetabley, grassy, and citrus, yet malty and burnt at the same time. Dirty leather. Complex, but this didn’t work for me and I can’t see it as a black IPA. Certainly not a summer drink.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 7, 2013 330ml bottle, 25/05/13, thanks bluus. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a medium, beige head. Aroma is roasted. Coffee is present as well as lemon. Some hoppy fruitiness too. Taste is roasted and nettles, slightly stingy juniper. Palate is alright, medium all around. Clean, well-done, but uninteresting and not my style black IPAs anyway.

Very dark brown beer with a good sized and decent holding head. Decent brew, good hopped and a nice holding bitter aftertaste.
