4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
I won’t give Mikkeller the credits here. It’s De Proefbrouwerij work, and their expertice that gave this beer it’s great taste. This is a really great lambic, clean and complex at the same time.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
The modern craft brewers try to master litterally ever style of beer that has ever existed it seems, and this is Mikkeller’s take on the transcendent ’oude geuze’, which, in spite of all the bold (and often successful) Anglo-Saxon attempts, is still the epitome of sour beer styles, in my humble opinion. Warm orangey gold colour, initially clear, with high, champagne-like effervescence, supporting a thin, off-white, fairly stable head. Musty and funky aroma indeed, impressions of lemon peel, lots of moist cellar and damp cloth, unripe peach, redcurrant, bitter honey, dry white wine, wheat and - excusez le mot - menure, but not necessarily in a ’bad’ way, if you see what I mean; in comparison with 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze, which I am tasting next to it as a standard for the style, it is a bit less strong and far less elegant, more ’damp’ and less fruity. Taste is vividly fruity, very estery, with a more ’dull’ and restrained but still clear citric acidity and a softer lactic acidity; less of the delicate sweetness than the 3 Fonteinen and, above all, a more forwarded bitterness, which increases a bit towards the end and which annoys me a little - sour beers have to be sour first and foremost, and bitterness should remain gentle and in the background. Mouthfeel is highly effervescent and ’champenoise’, wheat sourishness comes forward, light ’breadiness’ too; lemony acidity and the aforementioned, leafy hop bitterness struggle with each other for dominance of the finish. In all, a meritorious attempt at this enigmatic beer style, but clearly less complex, less refined and less attractive in aroma than the 3 Fonteinen; too bitter for the style as well. Still, quite well-made and credible, considering the difficulties of this particular style.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From notes. Tasted in December 2012 from a capped 375mL bottle purchased at Louisville Beer Store during Zwanze Day 2012. Pours hazy light orange with a thick white head that leaves average lace. The nose is tart and sour lemon with a touch of white wine vinegar, and a bit more bread malt than I am used to in most sours. The flavor is not super sour, but has some nice tartness and funk, with lemon peel and the malt a bit more balanced than on the nose. The body is medium and tannic with average carbonation and along tart and lightly malty bitter finish.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
375ml bottle (label states 5,3% ABV). Clear orange pour with a transient loose white head that reduces to a firm collar. Nose offers fresh apples, light barnyard, oranges, citrus, light malts and musty sweaty socks. Palate is tart light and refreshing with funky citric moderately sour flavours that do not grate and no bitterness. This is a fine gueuze.
