jookos (1927) - FINLAND - JUL 14, 2013
Bottle. Red with light pink head. Pretty good cherry / funk balance- has some of the fresh fruityness of the cherries left without being artificial or too sweet on the nose. Leathery oak, a bit of hay. Body is sharp, a bit acidic. Not as intense as the nose promised, but ok musty cherry flavours. A bit bland actually, or too much wheatyness. I really liked the nose, but the body wasn’t all there.

UPDATED: JUN 30, 2013 Pours a pretty raspberry jam color with a light pink head. Strong black cherry aroma with a lactic sourness, light phenols/coughdrops. Flavor is similar, maybe more lemony than the scent, again the coughdrop/jolly rancher thing is coming through. Bitter tannic cherry pit finish, could use a little polish.

Dark, deep red. Amazing aroma of cherries, malt, earth, wood. Not especially sour, but mildly tart on finish., rather earthy, pleasant, mellow cherry. Really enjoyable, but not the thing to go for if you are in a sour mood.

Bottle Poured into glass. Medium deep ruby red pour with a foamy light pink head. Smells a bit funky and cheesy, a bit of oak, and cherry skin. Taste is pretty funky and musty with cherry skin bitterness. Not as sour or lactic as I’d expect, but it’s enjoyable.

Pours a beautiful deep red color with a big pale pink head the leaves lots of lacing on the glass.

The aroma sure smells like the real thing, very earthy and oaky with lots of sour cherry character. Sort of skunky in that "good" way... pungent and barnyardy...

The flavor is earthy without a ton of fruit character, some light bitterness... the sourness is well controlled & the beer is very dry. Briney and oaky... sort of all over the place, it reminds me of some of the very old bottles of lambic I’ve tried... so that’s sort of cool, but a lot of the brightness of fruit that gets expressed in the aroma is sort of lost in the shuffle here, it’s not as tart or balanced as a good kriek, really even an old bottle of good kriek ought to be.

It is on all accounts enjoyable.

Poured into a tulip. Huge price on this ($13 for 12.7 oz), so it better be good. 3.5 A: Little gushing going on, but I was quick enough to not lose anything. Mildly hazed deep cherry red color. Big frothy pink head. Retention is decent and a few clumps of lacing are left behind. 4.0 S: Pretty good nose on this. Smells a lot, at its base, like some of the finer Belgian krieks in its rawness. Cherry opens the nose as the most potent aroma. Vinous grape underneath. Lots of funk that is mainly limited to the musty basement variety. Dry wood, sweat socks as well. As this isn’t very tart at all, this is definitely a funk forward kriek and those happen to be my favorite. Hay, dirt, and apple orchard. Light vanilla and oak. 3.0 T: While the nose gets by, and gets by well, with limited complexity, it really hurts the taste. Again this has basically no tartness or sourness, which I would have thought to be impossible when using cherries. Instead, you get a dry, dusty woodiness and musty basement funk. Moderate tannic astringency. Surprisingly little fruitiness - even the cherry doesn’t stand out much. Just a lot of one-dimensional funk. Not bad, but not good either. 3.5 M: Lighter body. Good moderate carbonation with a decent spritziness. Astringency lowers the smoothness a bit, but it’s okay overall. 3.0 D: Pretty mundane kriek. I could have almost bought a 3F Golden Blend for the same price. Mikkeller once again proves me to be an idiot for giving there mega-priced beers another chance. 375ml bottle. Lively foam-over, pours a bright red-ruby colour, frothy pink head that gradually diminishes leaving some lacing and aroma of tart cherry & lemon, barnyard. Taste is tart dark cherries, sour lemony and an earthy bitterness. Sharp, foamy mouthfeel, light bodied & highly carbonated with some acidity and a very dry finish. Quite drinkable.
