FlacoAlto (4000) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - SEP 11, 2015
2013 Bottle Date; Sampled August 2014
A steady pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a, perhaps, one-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a ruddy, straw / honey color that shows a clear, straw stained, rich golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells quite inviting, mostly meaning that it smells a lot more Lambic than I was expecting; musty, funky, earthy, musky, quite tart and lactic, with spicy grapefruit notes, and some floral citrus zest character that gets somewhat hidden by the ample lactic notes.

Soft and creamy textured (really quite nice, right in the sweet spot of where a Lambic should be), but has a soft, prickly, persistent carbonation. The has a full, hay-like, threshed pale grain character to it as well as a bitter, slightly astringent finish that seems a mix of dried hay notes, and perhaps some bitter citrus character. The mandarin / citrus character becomes a bit more distinct after a couple of sips, and it provides a nice, bright, citrusy finish to this beer. Definitely funky too, ample musty notes, with a phenolic not quite medicinal, not quite musky character, and slight dried-sweat leather notes. The lactic acidity is more in balance than it is in the nose (though it is not out of whack there), soft and well balanced by the pale malt / grain character, but still providing a sour flavor that anchors the whole the whole beer.

This is a really nice example of a "Lambic"; the mandarin character is certainly supporting, and a bit muted compared to many expressive fruit Lambics, but it is well done here, and really supports the whole.

Bottle. A lightly hazy, golden beer topped by a small, off-white head. The aroma has some orangey notes, with lemon juice, barnyard and a generic funky note. It’s medium bodied, tart and with a pleasant carbonation level. There’s not much mandarin in the flavor either, but it’s the usual lambic flavors that dominates, funky, leathery and lemony. Some faint earthy notes. Lasting funky finish with funkyness. Easy drinkable and tasteful this one. 150808

Clear golden color with little foam crown at the glass. Quite funky sour smell that is quite lambic-like. The taste is delightful sour, but only a little citrus fruity. Dry and sourish taste. Not as convincing as other spontan beers but still good.

Golden color with small white head. Nice funk, really on lambic-levels. Taste is sour and dry, with the fruit coming through rather late, but then it is present. Dry finish, very sour. Soft, but present carbonation. Fantastic. One of my favourites from the spontan series.
