Bottle to oversized tulip. Looks good; dark and opaque with thin lacing. Smells good too; The whiskey barrels are pleasant, but you pick up the pepper on the back end. Tastes solid (I didn’t want to say "good" again). Nice flavors from the barreling with a mild, pleasant pepper experience. Mouthfeel is decent. Overall, a tasty brew.

Having had the non-specific ’Barrel Aged’ some time ago (pre-Ratebeer) and declaring it one of the finest drinks available to humanity, i was understandably looking forward to this! Not sure I can detect what the Speyside casks have added - it’s still the lovely, rich, well-balanced drink I remember, with just a hint of heat coming through from the chilies tickling your tongue on the finish. The smoke works so well with the overall malt-bill, the hop bitterness is just right. Damn fine porter.

Sampled at Borefts Beer Festival @ De Molen, Bodegraven. Full light brown head on top of a pitch black, opaque colored beer. Smell coffee, roasty, smokey, caramel, chocolate. Taste coffee, bitter, roasty, smokey, caramel. Great carbo, good ABV, full body. Great beer!

pours motor oil black with lots of coffee tan head. Smells sweet, rich and boozy, with lots of wood. Nice and smooth up front with almost a sweet wood and whiskey aftertaste. I don’t get a ton of spice but that might be from the age of the bottle very interesting flavour non the less.

On tap. Pours black and opaque with a small light brown head leaving a discreet lacework. Sweet roasted malt in the nose - and sweet whisky notes. Quite a rich body, a little low in carbonation, sweet roasted malt, somwwhat oxidized barrel character where the whisky feels smooth and warming. Hardly any bitterness. 011011

Loved the unbarreled version... if anything this needs to go in bourbon or just plain oak barrels. The peat finish and the oxidation/soy character seem to be a bit at odds with the beauty of this beer with less age on it. Still love that Mikkel nailed the heat of the peppers, really magnificent but not my fav of the bunch.

Bottle shared by a friend as part of the reprieve following the Hopsnobbery Collective’s first (and last) Crappy Beer Tasting on 2/29/12. Pitch black pour with a thin light brown head. Malty nose with notes of apple, booze, chocolate and slight pepper. Chocolate malt flavor followed closely by whiskey and smoke before a boozy finish with a slight apple accent.
