3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUL 31, 2010 On draught (from a recyclable cardboard keg) at 33 Wine Shop & Tasting Bar in St. Louis. The beer is a dark brown color with a thick tan head that diminishes slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Savory aroma of chili peppers and roasted malt. Medium body with flavors of peppers, malt, coffee and some other spices in the background. The finish is spicy with a lingering smoky aftertaste. Interesting, above average beer all around.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2010 A Mes rate. Draught at Københavns Ølfestival 2010.
A good looking black bodied beer with a very good tan head. Lots of chilli infused chocolate and peppery spicy notes. Some coffee and lots of roasty character. Really well balanced for a chilli beer. Surprisingly good stuff.
Re-rated by Sim - the true Texan (on tap at Copenhagen Beer Festival): Aroma is sweet but bitter with wine and whisky. Pitch black appearance with great lacing. Roasty bitter flavour. It’s that last espresso on a long night. It’s that corner of toast that you’d have cut off and thrown away if only you weren’t that hungry. I wish there was more chili. It’s just a tiny bite of heat. I’d love to drop some chipotle Tabasco into this. Thick and tasty palate. It’s really good. Yeehaw!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours very dark brown with a dense sturdy brown head. The aroma has lots of chocolate, roast, leather and light smoke. Medium / full body with some soft carbonation. The flavor initially has chocolate, smoke, chipotle spiciness and a good amount of roastiness. The finish is crisp and has more chipotle taste than I thought could come from a beer. This is quite interesting and I’m glad I tried it, but I wouldn’t want it too often.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted from bottle purchased at West Lakeview Liquors. Pours opaque black with a massive mocha head that slowly recedes to massive lace. The first smell is coffee, but underlying is the smoky chipotle whose spice sticks with the nostrils for a few seconds after nosing. There are also some stewed fruit and wet tobacco aromas. The flavor is very similar, tasting like a complex coffee porter up front with some prune and tobacco and then moving on to the spicy and smoky combination of chipotle on the back. The body is huge and coating with heavy carbonation and a long spicy (literally) finish. This beer is very unique, and I cannot imagine this combination of flavors coming together any better.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
big bottle. Pours black with a big brown head. Nose is of chocolate and smoke. Taste starts off with chocolate and ash, then the chili peppers become more and more noticeable over time. Mouthfeel is medium with a dry and spicy finish. Very interesting.

What the fuck is wrong with all of you??? Interesting: yes. Good: not at all. Pour is dark chocolate black with a nice dense and tight bubbled milk chocolate colored head...smell is smokey, peppery, cocoa, feet, dirt...taste is just a flavor trainwreck...chocolate and peppers might almost always go well together, but not this time...chocolate, wood, smoke, spice, black pepper, white pepper...finish is lingeringly herbal and bitter...blech....

Pitch black with a huge dark khaki head. Nose is light pepper, chocolate, roasted malts, and a bittersweet overtone. Nice on the palate, flavor is roasted malts upfront, roasted chocolate, faint pepper, big toasty aftertaste with a nice spiciness in the end.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUL 20, 2010 Bottle. Sweet! Had to take a break from the yeast series... no way I was going to make it through all 5 in one sitting. Pours an oily creamy super dark brown, somewhat near black with a tall foamy light mocha sticky head. Aroma of sweet chipotle peppers, odd smokiness, beef jerky, red pepper like aroma, bit of roast, really interesting. Flavor of creamy chocolate, maybe some oats, light smokiness, finishing of chipotle with a light sharp sweetness, medium heat, more so towards the finish, interesting yeast character, very light plastic, the chipotle and chocolate are pretty awesome, off-dry, dry coffee, wood and cream. I love the heat! Medium/full bodied, creamy but not heavy, great amount of fluffy but soft sizzling carbonation. A very nice beer and quite unique. Okay, I know this beer isn’t perfect, or near that, but there needs to be more beers like this... Tyranena has a similar one that I drank by the case. This stuff has some nice heat, coffee and chocolate... loving it.

pour a thick black oil lookin sludge.
the head grows slowly... so slowly, in fact, it grew right out of my glass and onto my counter after I stopped pouring with, what I thought was plenty of room. damnit.
smell is of chocolate and a hint of spice on it. other than that, a smell of something I can only describe as "clean".
taste is of a nice chocolate front, with the typical porter smoothness, but the best thing about this is the waaaay in the back of my throat, on the finish, there is some heat, excellent!!
overall this is an excellent porter, and for those that like spicy foods, and darker beers, this is for you! easily one of the best porters I have had... they didnt try to kick up the alcohol, though I have become accustom to that, so am a bit disappointed it isnt an imperial... but bein a spice-head, I’ll take what I can get!
