Black colored pour. Slight tan head. Plenty of lacing left behind. Smells of chocolate, coffee, and malt. Tastes of pretty much the same with a nice sharp pepper burn. A nice burning on the back to remind you that there are peppers in this thing. One of the best pepper beers I have had thus far. A nice chocolatey aftertaste mixed in with the peppers. Very good.

Tap @ Mikkeller. Aroma is very roasted, ashy, dark chocolate, liquorice, coffee and a fruity hint of chili. The roasted notes play well together. Taste has the roasted elements of the nose, charcoal and coffee, sweet liquorice, the chili is subtle at first, but as you drink it, it becomes very, very hot, too hot for me. But overall a very nice beer.

750ml from Sam’s, Durham. Nice dark brown pour with hints of ruby and flecks of tan sediment here and there. Nice billowy tan head too, substantial and a bit ornery. Nose is really nice, with a deep and rich porter character being immediately detectable via chocolate malts and roasts. Peppers are there in the nose, but only faintly so. Hefty, smooth body but not so much that it weighs you down. Drinks pretty elegantly as a matter of fact. But there are the peppers, coming on strong. There’s plenty of other action here, with dry hops nicely lingering throughout, a really strong roasted element, and hella dark choc. But Jack, the chilis own this beer. Good thing they’re gracious enough to share space with the other flavors but it’s their show. Well done, though, as lesser beers would lose all their character with something this assertive. Here, the whole hangs together well.

Tap. Very dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma has roasted malt, pine and plenty of fruity and smokey chipotles. That rich fruitiness that’s a big part of the appeal of them comes right through. Slightly syrupy. Taste has firm but not harsh roast, moderate fruit and brown sugar sweetness, barbeque. Finishes dry, and at first there’s not much chilli heat, but it builds. It’s kind of one note, but that note is itself complex. Good.

[keg at BrewDog Edinburgh] Deep chocolate brown pour, verging on the black. Thin white head. Pretty spicy pepper aroma, coffee and extreme bitterness. Nothing fruity about this one – black pepper at first, then rising through the spiky chilli kick. Oily bitterness. Harsh on the back of the throat. Well made, but beer should be rewarding. I guess chilli beers just aren’t for me [21082011]

Outstanding chili beer. Nice black color with tan head. Scent is smoky with maybe a hint of the peppers. The spiciness comes out in the aftertaste; the taste itself is that of a nice porter.

Black with a large and frothy mocca coloured head. Aroma is roasty and raw with only slightly chili at first but opens up and mellows as it sits and warms a bit to reveal chocolate and a whole lot more chili. Some hops make themselves noticed in the taste, followed by chocolate in the middle before the chili onslaught begins. There are loads of chili, both flavour and heat. This stuff is hot for sure!

It pours DARK chocolate brown with fluffy tan-orange head. Smokey aromas chocolate, barbecue and alcohol. Nice flavors of mocha and chili. It’s full bodied, a little slick and moderately carbed. The burn sticks in your throat so be ready. DELICIOUS

bottle at dak’s 9/5/10. beautiful beer... thick, black and menacing capped by by an orange tinted brown head. the aroma is more bacon-y than the beer geek bacon we just finished!... mixed in are notes of earhty spicy chiles, smoke, vegetals, peppercorns, roast and chocolate. the flavor is the same only with some ashiness and a mild tartness on the finish. heat shows up in the back of the throat. it is medium bodied and creamy though much thinner than expected. 8/5/7/3/15
