750ml Bottle: Aroma of roasting, malt, light chocolate, and a hint of chili. Poured black in color with a medium-sized, creamy, dense, rocky, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer, as well as around the edges. Opaque. Sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, and lightly spicy. Tastes of malt, roast, chocolate, light chilies, and slight coffee. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malt, roast, light chocolate, and spicy chile finish.

Pours a luscious sable just a whisker above black with a very thick and fluffy dark tan head that sticks around for a bit. Aroma has a strong overtone of semi-sweet chocolate as well as molasses and roast coffee notes and a hint of toffee. Flavor fills the mouth with chocolate, roast coffee and molasses tones plus nutty and toffee hints. The chilis add an interesting and unique zing to the full-bodied and fizzy flavor, making it unique among all beers that I have tried so far. A must for porter fans, if you don’t mind a bit of pepper heat.

Black, with a big brown head with light lacing. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, chipotle peppers, roasted malt, wood. The taste is rich and malty, moderately spicy, and woody. Medium-full bodied, dry, and creamy. Very, very good.

UPDATED: FEB 5, 2013 Bottle, sample. Black with a porous light brown head. Aroma: coffee, chocolate, quite dry. Taste: chocolate, really hot chili, licorice, coffee, a bit creamy, spicy finish. I’m a big fan of spicy food, but for me this isn’t completely successful. Still a pretty nice one though. 8/4/7/4/15

Sample tried at Gothenburg Beer Festival on September 3. Pours a black liquid with a small brown head. Smell is of roasted malt, tobacco, chocolate and green chili peppers. The taste is dominated with the smoked character of the chipotle pepper but there is also some liquorice and chocolate. The aftertaste is dominated by the chili heat but as someone used to hot food I don’t take too much notice of the heat. A good chili beer even though I can imagine that people not used to chili would have enjoyed less heat.

Bottle@På besök, Malmö, Sweden Sweet aroma of coffee, smoke, chili, tar and soy. Black color with brown head. Taste of coffee, chocolate, chili. Medium body and carbonation, slightly oily texture. Nice beer! Well, I do love chipotle so I’m not too surprised I liked it.

Tap at Mikkeller bar. Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Espresso and chocolate aromas. Spicy chocolate and espresso upfront turning hot in the lasting finish.

Black colored pour. Slight tan head. Plenty of lacing left behind. Smells of chocolate, coffee, and malt. Tastes of pretty much the same with a nice sharp pepper burn. A nice burning on the back to remind you that there are peppers in this thing. One of the best pepper beers I have had thus far. A nice chocolatey aftertaste mixed in with the peppers. Very good.

Tap @ Mikkeller. Aroma is very roasted, ashy, dark chocolate, liquorice, coffee and a fruity hint of chili. The roasted notes play well together. Taste has the roasted elements of the nose, charcoal and coffee, sweet liquorice, the chili is subtle at first, but as you drink it, it becomes very, very hot, too hot for me. But overall a very nice beer.

750ml from Sam’s, Durham. Nice dark brown pour with hints of ruby and flecks of tan sediment here and there. Nice billowy tan head too, substantial and a bit ornery. Nose is really nice, with a deep and rich porter character being immediately detectable via chocolate malts and roasts. Peppers are there in the nose, but only faintly so. Hefty, smooth body but not so much that it weighs you down. Drinks pretty elegantly as a matter of fact. But there are the peppers, coming on strong. There’s plenty of other action here, with dry hops nicely lingering throughout, a really strong roasted element, and hella dark choc. But Jack, the chilis own this beer. Good thing they’re gracious enough to share space with the other flavors but it’s their show. Well done, though, as lesser beers would lose all their character with something this assertive. Here, the whole hangs together well.
