Kita (1500) - Koper, SLOVENIA - SEP 5, 2014
Bottle, 0.33l, shared with Hoppiness crew. Murky dark brown color with medium creamy light brown head and nice lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, dried fruits with some peppery hints. Taste starts with moderate sweet and rich roasted malt, follows by chocolate note and fruity acidity. When beer gets warmer chipotle chili peppers break loose and create warming and tingling spicy mouthfeel, while spiciness is still present in medium bitter aftertaste. Full body, syrupy texture and soft carbonation in palate. Above excellent...

Mikkeller frappe encore.

Pour thanks to daknole! Deep brown/black with an intense beige head. Mikkeller makes such attractive beers. Aroma is heavy with dark chocolate, espresso, and a nice underlying spice. Flavor shows the same with additional roast malt, light smoke, and the chipotle spice definately makes itself known. Overall body is full, viscous, and finishes with a dry bitterness and spicy heat. Mmmm.

Bottle. Dark body, medium tan head. Sweet and roasty aroma with some coffee. Big sweet and roasty taste. Finish reveals the chili heat. Not sure if I like chili in beers or not. If you want your beer to taste hot, why not just crank up the ABV? The stout base is good, however.

750mL "Chipotle Porter" bottle. A jet-black pour with a thick & creamy mocha head that leaves rings of lacing behind. A rich aroma that features lots of smoke, chili peppers, BBQ, cocoa powder, caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla, and some grapefruity hoppiness in the background. Medium to full-bodied and silky smooth on the way down. The taste is moderately sweet upfront with some chocolate, cocoa, and caramel. A fairly dry finish that lingers with a bit of grapefruitiness. Wow! A really authentic BIG chili pepper burn in the back of the throat that hangs around forever. The chipotle peppers actually overshadow the ample hoppiness. Some smokiness (BBQ and charcoal) is present throughout. Interesting and unique. I’ve had other beers brewed with chili peppers, but none have imparted the essence on this level. Another winner from Mikkeller.

On tap at Henriks. Dark black colour with a small dark beige, almost creamy, head. Pleasant and classic stout aromas of coffee, roasted malt and dark chocolate with a hint of smoke. The flavours is mostly parallel with the aromas but feels a bit sweeter in the mouth. It ends with a accelerating chili bitterness that lasts. I regularly don’t fancy very hot food, but this chili-burn in my mouth feels pleasant in the end. A fantastic creation!

Dark. Not much chipotle but can definitely pick up smoke. Rounds out to strong coffee.

UPDATED: MAR 4, 2014 This is the most viscous looking beer I’ve had in a very long time: the pitch black liquid barely drips out the bottle! A large, creamy and very dense head with a scary dark brown colour forms easily and stays big for a long time before settling as a thick layer. Lots of foam is still clinging to the glass after the Texas Ranger is gone. The aroma is very strong and not surprisingly on the malty side. It’s heavily roasted with dark caramel, coffee and liquorice, some fainter chocolate and in the back I get traces of fruits and berries and even some juicy tobacco. Delicious! I can’t say I pick up any chilli in the aroma, but the chipotle certainly is obvious in the flavours! Especially in the long, moderate bitter aftertaste, the burning chilli makes this a beer you don’t hurl down, this is definitely a sipper. The initial taste is moderate sweet, and this soothes the palate for a while, until the next wave of chilli attacks. Other flavours include roasted notes, coffee and liquorice, and more pronounced notes of chocolate and tobacco that I found in the flavours. I also get vague hints of leather. The mouthfeel (and throat feel!) is very rough due to the chilli, and in the beginning it was actually a bit unpleasant. Further down in the glass I’m slowly getting used to the roughness. The body is full, the texture is very oily and slick, the carbonation is soft. A wonderful and intense beer, although it’s a bit demanding. The most demanding part is of course all the googling that’s involved: how to pronounce "chipotle"?
