Retorp (2148), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 The aroma smells of detergent, snapped green tree branches and low grade gasoline with a hint of roasted malt and chocolate beneath. The body is deep black and holds a tight tan head. The first sip I can only describe as bland, boozy and dirty. Tastes like unwashed, fresh picked, black-eyed peas steeped in tepid pond water. Gets earthy, tart and bitter in the finish. What a mess. How could such an amazing brewer put out a beer this awful?

I’ve been waiting a while to crack this beer, one of many Mikkelers that we for some reason don’t get in my part of NC. At any rate, a very handsome dark pour with some lively carbonation and a pleasant glow to it. In both the nose and the taste, it’s yeasty in the best way possible (something I often dislike in porters, but which works just fine here). It’s nicely malted, which suits the big chewy body. But it’s also lightly and interestingly spiced, with hints of nutmeg. There’s a somewhat dusty and dry finish. Nutmeg and jasmin aroma. Dark brown color, brown head, good lace. Malty, roasted, ash in the finish, laurel, nutmeg. Not exceptional, a bit too spicy for me.
