Maria (3975), Thisted, Denmark May 21, 2007 Københavnske Øldage 07. Draught. Where to end - and where to begin?? I have looked forward to this pitch black beer with the proud, nice and creamy head, for a long time - and I have often been sad, that I couldn’t find a 2006. The aroma has notes of dark roasted malt, dark, dried fruits and licorice. The mouthfeel gives the word oily a completely new meaning. The flavour is slightly sweet, incredibly smooth and harmonic, and there is an underlying bitterness, that blends in, and becomes a piece of this giant puzzle. I find notes of coffee, licorice, chocolate, dark, dried fruits like preserved plum, port wine and the overall impression is incredibly complex, unique and fantastic - boy, am I lucky to have tasted this one!! 2201 Theis (2039), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 17, 2007 Draught at Københavnske Øldage 2007. I LOVE THIS. Black - brown head. Chokolate-power. Dried dark fruits, plums, raisins, plums, brown sauce, syrup, soya, oily, used motor oil, light roasted, brown sugar, a bit portwine like, high very nice hoppy, and a lot more. A very big and smooth mouthfeeling. Could easily be too mush - but it works very well !! ChristianScheffel (2087), Odense, Denmark Sep 29, 2007 Black with a medium lasting, light brown head. Chocolate, port and toffee aroma. Sweet flavour with caramel and port, intense long aftertaste. A little bit too sweet. joergen (6257), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 21, 2007 Draught.
Black coloured with a small beige head.
Roasted aroma of liquorice, port wine and prunes.
Sweet and roasted flavour of chocolate, liquorice, port wine and dried fruits.
Roasted finish. Belgo (137), Køge, Denmark May 16, 2007 Draught at Københavnske Øldage 2007.
Blacker than black. Appears extremely thick in the glass. Funny thing was that when I poured it into the glass it didn’t make a sound at all; it’s THAT thick!
The aromas are those of sweet liquorice, dark roasted coffee, muscovado sugar, some spicy/flowery notes and a hint of animal notes too from the brett. On the palate it is light and very fresh, and........ Ohh rubbish ;-) this is one of the most massive beers I’ve ever had. Very soft and supersweet but the sweetness is balanced perfectly by the hop bitterness, the acidity from the roasted malts and probably a bit by the brett too.
This is a fantastic beer! It has the potential to evolve into a perfect one just as the 06 version, but for that to happen it needs some extra time to let the brett evolve further.
It was a rare privilege to stand behind the bar and serve this beer to a massive gathering of beer geeks.
