Keg at Kulovy Blesk. Pours Black with a tan head. Enticing roasty aroma. The flavour is chocolatey with vanilla and smoke. There’s an outside suggestion of festive spice and some charred wood. Thick and full bodied. Outstanding.

Bottle from Yamaichi. Huge chocolate and berry nose, dried fruits, light coffee. Very tempting. Lovely tan, rocky head on black beer. Huge chocolate and café au lait flavor. Chocolate cake. Woody roastiness and pretty big bitterness too. Berries. Some phenols. Very thick and rich. Excellent stuff.

75 cl. bottle sampled @ 18th Christmasbeer festival in Essen. The annual Mikkeller holiday card / Christmas porter which I must admit is still a pretty cool, idea / gift – Mikkel has a lot of these cool ideas going on. Pours a blackish very dark brown with a spotty mocha head. Smell is totally my thing, sweet creamy coffee, very creamy mocha, very milky milk chocolate, cream,…. Taste is totally coffee but unfortunately for me bitter & not sweet coffee, this one has oodles of coffee bitterness in it. I am getting quite bitter coffee, lots of roast, strongly burned, almost nearing campfire, very light turf, charcoal, bitter burned grains, bitter chocolate, I am trying to find some sweetness, only in the end followed by light booze. Slightly grainy body. Great stuff for people who like bitter porter – I personally liked the 2011 way more because that one was sweet :)

Bottle from Systembolaget. Very dark brown with a tan head leaving a nice lacing. Spices, chocolate, soy, coffee and ark sugar in the aroma. Taste goes FROM bitter chocolate TO a burnt bitterness VIA a smokey character that reminds me of grilled/burnt aubergine skin.

Bottle sample @ 18de Kerstbierfestival, Essen 2012.

750ml bottle. Pitch black colour with huge, thick, frothy to creamy, lasting, lacing, brown head. Nuttily dark malty aroma with herbal hoppy overtones. Very soft, creamy palate. Taste is minimally sweet nuttily dark malty, roasty, herbal hoppy overtones. Plain-vanilla, accurate Porter.

750mL bottle. Poured deep brown with a creamy, sticky, well-retained smoked tan head. The aroma picked up burnt chocolate, black malts, and a bit of coffee topped by dank pine resin and almost floral hops.. hoppier than I usually want from the style, but it was well done. The flavor found similar stuff.. bright, mostly piney bitterness and some fresh acidity over burnt chocolate and black malts.. lots of residual bitterness and grainy sugars on the warm finish.. tasty stuff. Medium-plus bodied and very bitter on the palate.. fresh and engaging.. very good stuff, but a little brash at times.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2012 Sampled at OBER Kerstbierfestival 2012. Pitch black opaque color, small lightly creamy, fair lacing brown head. Smell and taste roasted and burned malts, coffee, moccha, earth and bitter. Heavy, strong, full. Nice enough but a bit too much coffee.
