3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from HOTB. Pours a dark brown with a medium brown head. The head is full and large but dies to sustain at a light foam. Aroma of bourbon and vanilla. Taste is a bit harsh up front with a warm roasty chocolatey finish with a bit of ash to it. Slightly dry. Light carbonation and a thin feel.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
27th October 2012
Opaque black beer, good grey - tan head. Smooth palate, softish and semi dry. Smooth dark malt. Bitterish seltzer minerals. A little bitter wood. Raisins. Mild and smooth bourbon. Towards the dry finish mild roast malt appears. Not bad, needs to warm up a bit - a bit clunky when fridge fresh.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours turbid dark black with minimal head. Nose is big oaky bourbon, some spice, hops, roasty malt, plum. Tastes rich, with roasty malt, oak and bourbon up front, some plum, cherry, and spice at mid-palate, and as it warms it gets port winey, with subtle and effective oak. Nicely made, as usual with these guys.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
A rich porter made with all the usual Xmas spices (cloves, corriander seed, star anise), aged for 8 months in bourbon barrels. Nice mocca head, taste full of dark chocolate, vanilla, warming whisky and finishing with smooth coffee.. this is what Xmas should taste like!!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Live rate. It’s the weekend, it’s late, the fridge is empty, the cupboard’s bare...hitting the Christmas beers. Only 234 shopping days to go. Pours glossy mahogany with a filthy manila collar. Smoky bourbon, Deep Heat, high cocoa chocolate, molasses and dried black grape on the nose. Even better on the palate where the barrel imparts a more restrained, integrated bourbon-ness. Mellow chocolate, blue/blackberry, dried fruit, yeast extract and soapy, possibly US hop notes join the party. Pleasingly bitter, hop-forward finish with a distinct smear of something tropical about it..crystallised lemon? Smooth, quietly tongue-numbing alcohol with tobacco, espresso and chocolate in the aftertaste. Hint of Halls Mentholyptus. Might put the tree up.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
In short: A simplistic roasted and lightly spicy porter/stout that is easy despite being overwhelmed by bourbon oak. Good beer.
How: Bottle 375ml. Consumed a little less than 1 year after purchase, almost 4 years before expiration date, home delivered by my man Jay.
The look: Black body topped by a large tan head with medium retention.
In long: Nose is simplistic bourbon soaked oak barrels and then some more. Nothing else to say about the aroma, simplistic but not aggressively bourbonny, kind of inviting actually with the oak coming out even stronger than the actual bourbon. Taste is highly roasted, chocolaty, grainy, lots of wood/oak, medium bourbon presence, lights spicy notes of anise and cloves. Medium body with a lot of bubbles making the beer feel a bit ‘airy’. Surprisingly smooth and easy to drink for a beer that is basically overwhelmed by bourbon barrels, I drank my bottle like it was a session stout. Looses a few points for lack of complexity but gets them back for high drinkability relative to the style. A good beer, yet another bourbon barrel aged beer, and sadly nowadays 56% of new beers being released are aged in bourbon barrels and 4% of my ratings contain unverified percentages I just made up.

Bottle. Pours a near clear deep brown with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of deep grains and light spice with a touch of bourbon and apple. Flavor has dark grains with a bit of light fruit and apple with a touch of light spice and bourbon in the finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours deep brown to black with a medium brown creamy head that slowly dissipates with decent lacing. Aroma is bourbon, chocolate, roasted malts, a touch of soy sauce. Flavor is the same, light sweetness and a light woody astringency. Bourdon notes are strong. Medium body, lots of carbonation. Not as good as I was hoping, actually.
