Live rate. It’s the weekend, it’s late, the fridge is empty, the cupboard’s bare...hitting the Christmas beers. Only 234 shopping days to go. Pours glossy mahogany with a filthy manila collar. Smoky bourbon, Deep Heat, high cocoa chocolate, molasses and dried black grape on the nose. Even better on the palate where the barrel imparts a more restrained, integrated bourbon-ness. Mellow chocolate, blue/blackberry, dried fruit, yeast extract and soapy, possibly US hop notes join the party. Pleasingly bitter, hop-forward finish with a distinct smear of something tropical about it..crystallised lemon? Smooth, quietly tongue-numbing alcohol with tobacco, espresso and chocolate in the aftertaste. Hint of Halls Mentholyptus. Might put the tree up.

In short: A simplistic roasted and lightly spicy porter/stout that is easy despite being overwhelmed by bourbon oak. Good beer.
How: Bottle 375ml. Consumed a little less than 1 year after purchase, almost 4 years before expiration date, home delivered by my man Jay.
The look: Black body topped by a large tan head with medium retention.
In long: Nose is simplistic bourbon soaked oak barrels and then some more. Nothing else to say about the aroma, simplistic but not aggressively bourbonny, kind of inviting actually with the oak coming out even stronger than the actual bourbon. Taste is highly roasted, chocolaty, grainy, lots of wood/oak, medium bourbon presence, lights spicy notes of anise and cloves. Medium body with a lot of bubbles making the beer feel a bit ‘airy’. Surprisingly smooth and easy to drink for a beer that is basically overwhelmed by bourbon barrels, I drank my bottle like it was a session stout. Looses a few points for lack of complexity but gets them back for high drinkability relative to the style. A good beer, yet another bourbon barrel aged beer, and sadly nowadays 56% of new beers being released are aged in bourbon barrels and 4% of my ratings contain unverified percentages I just made up.

Bottle. Pours a near clear deep brown with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of deep grains and light spice with a touch of bourbon and apple. Flavor has dark grains with a bit of light fruit and apple with a touch of light spice and bourbon in the finish.

Bottle. Pours deep brown to black with a medium brown creamy head that slowly dissipates with decent lacing. Aroma is bourbon, chocolate, roasted malts, a touch of soy sauce. Flavor is the same, light sweetness and a light woody astringency. Bourdon notes are strong. Medium body, lots of carbonation. Not as good as I was hoping, actually.

Pours an opaque brownish-black from the bottle with a thin lacy tan ring and moderate lacing. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla sweetness, hints of chocolate and soy. Taste follows, with bitter coffee back and still a hint of astringency. Bourbon barrel aged is a whole hell of a lot better.

Thanks jbruner. Dark black pour with tan head. Aroma of roasted malt bourbon wood chocolate. Taste similar. More complex and blended than the non barrel aged version.

Bottle at home. Pours jet black with a medium creamy beige head. The aroma is burned roasted with some spicy notes. Sure some bourbon there. The flavour is bourbon, roasted malt, hops and soy. Dominated by the bourbon. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I expected this to be a monster but it was nothing of the sort. Aroma, although very strong bourbon was nowhere near as heavy as I expected. Taste also strong bourbon but somewhat thinner mouthfeel than the hype promised. A little too heavy on the bourbon and a little too lacking in depth. A great porter but my expectation was higher.
