Bitters have been the common drink in English pubs for decades. Mill St ESB uses only traditional ingredients, Marris Otter malt and Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops, all imported from England. With light malt and hops in the nose, this copper coloured ale gives rise to a malty body with hints of chocolate and black currents. The hoppiness is always present but never out of balance in this style.

Excellent ESB. Malty and nutty with a nice hoppy ending. Good body, too. Brilliant in every aspect except perhaps for the head which didn’t last too long.

A lightly hazed dark amber with a thick moka head. Aroma of caramel malt and mashed pea. In mouth, a rather chalky and boring ale, almost lager like, no British hops, medium bodied. On tap at brewpub, August 7 2010.

Cask, Mill Street Brewery, Toronto, ON, Canada. Light brown, citrus caramel aroma. Smooth with a lemon citrus burn at the back of the throat.

Fresh sample from a growler. Thanks to my friend Adil. A hazed copper pour, with one finger of beige froth. Nose of toasty malts, fresh floral hops, some lemon, bread, cookie dough. Tastes of toasty sweet malts, nready, with zesty floral hops, a bit grassy too. Not really ESB like, more of a hoppy amber. Finishes with a nice lengthy bitterness. Good. Thanks Adil!

Dry hopped and on cask at Volo cask days ramp up. Appearance: dark rusty orange with a small but lasting head. Aroma: bitter malt, damp wood. Flavour: nice muted dry malt, wood, a reasonable amount of hops in the finish.

At the brewpub. Dark orange/brown. Nice head. Fruity, caramel nose. Went down well, good bitter finish. Not much in the flavour department, but a decent afternoon pint.

On draft at Mill Street Brewpub. Deep amber in colour with medium carbonation. Fairly malty aromas along with notes of stewed berry fruit. More malt notes in the mouth, along with toffee, toasted nuts, more fruit, and a hint of grassy + earthy hops. Well balanced overall, with a fair bit of bitterness. A good effort, but plays a little too safe.
