COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Colony Oatmeal Stout Colony Oatmeal Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. But since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The ’oatmeal’ in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied stout, this beer is for you!

Draft at the brewery. Pour is near black with a creamy tan head. Aroma and flavors are roasted malt, light chocolate and a touch of coffee. Not mind blowing but certainly very solid. Clean.

Bottle. A- Black licorice, tobacco, coffee, roasty, cocoa. A- Black color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Roasty, cocoa, anise, tobacco, coffee, malty. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- This was a pleasant surprise. Didn’t expect much but got a lot. Nice rich and deep flavors with anise and tobacco seeming to come through the most on the nose and a complex taste. Enjoyed this one well enough.

12oz bottle sold to me by some dipass that is on this site, thanks bro. Poured a pitch black body with an average quick fading deep beige fizzy head. Aroma is on the weak side, chocolate, marshmallow, wet burnt toast, hint of vanilla extract. Body is medium with some average to lighter carbonation. Flavor is better than the aroma, notes of well done toast, dark chocolate, marshmallow, oats. Good stuff.

12 oz bottle purchased as a single at Beer Crazy in Urbandale, Iowa. The pour is a black brown with a khaki head that falls fast. The aroma is a soft roast. The taste is char roast, the oatmeal and a clean dry mineral finish. The palate is medium to heavy bodied with soft carbonation and the clean finish. Solid Stout.

bottle @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Black color with a tan head that completely disappears, no lace. Very still, unappealing looking. Taste is roasted malt, a little chocolate, and some carbonation edge in the finish. Pretty disappointing, not really workable.

Predictably opaque cocoa brown, with a tan ring of head. Aroma of s’mores, roasted hazelnut coffee beans, cocoa powder. A little watery/lack of complexity in the initial mouthfeel, but finishes with a nice roasty, dry flavor, as if you just bit into a coffee bean. The oats impart more of a textural quality, a little granular. Pretty straightforward "everyday" oatmeal stout. Not lackluster by any means, as the ratings might indicate. Decent.
