COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Colony Oatmeal Stout Colony Oatmeal Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. But since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The ’oatmeal’ in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied stout, this beer is for you!

Upping my stout AND Iowa cred with this one. Pour is dark as expected, not quite black but surely not clear. Thin palate gives way to some roasted oats, I dunno, some of the other 200 ratings will be beter for you to read.

bottle @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Black color with a tan head that completely disappears, no lace. Very still, unappealing looking. Taste is roasted malt, a little chocolate, and some carbonation edge in the finish. Pretty disappointing, not really workable.

Predictably opaque cocoa brown, with a tan ring of head. Aroma of s’mores, roasted hazelnut coffee beans, cocoa powder. A little watery/lack of complexity in the initial mouthfeel, but finishes with a nice roasty, dry flavor, as if you just bit into a coffee bean. The oats impart more of a textural quality, a little granular. Pretty straightforward "everyday" oatmeal stout. Not lackluster by any means, as the ratings might indicate. Decent.

Bottle, pours black color with small head. Notes are licorice, malt, coffee, and roast. Not thick bodied like they said but refreshing. Still too bland and weak to get a nice tick

On tap at the brewery. Black appearance with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted dark malts, coffee, dark chocolate, earthy hops and a touch of dark fruits. Similar flavor, malty and smooth with light bitterness. Medium body with a lingering finish.

Beer of month club. Pours dark, dark brown with half finger tan head. Nose of coffee, roasted malt. Taste of some black licorice, roasted malt. Thickness/chewiness to it. Not incredibly complex for a stout, but a good, straight forward, basic one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
