Colony Oatmeal Stout Colony Oatmeal Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. But since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The íoatmealí in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied stout, this beer is for you!

UPDATED: MAY 18, 2007 Bottle. I emailed the brewery and they suggested the off taste came from the fact that I had an 8-month old bottle; since they donít pasteurize their beer, thatís past its prime. I will definietly buy more fresh beer and revise my rating at a future date. Starts out really nice. Beautiful roast coffee smell when opened. Pours a deep black body under a thin tan head. Taste is very roasty, too, but I also get the big sour orange taste other raters mentioned, followed by a punch of Coca-cola. Taste does settle out to a nice creamy oatmeal stout, but the sour cola gets in the way. How could they got such a taste with a lager yeast?

Smells like coffee and a tiny bit of vanilla. Black in color, with a small tan head that is gone in about a minute. Taste is coffee and roasted malts, I personaly donít taste the slight vanilla I can smell. A bit watery... I would like it more if it didnít have that slight watered down taste, and the vanilla was stronger. Pleasantly surprised considering I only picked it up since it was a Iowa brew.

Dark cola colored beer with a thin beige head that disappears almost immediately. Rich nose of nuts, cocoa, and vanilla bean. The flavor starts with some roasted grain and charred brown sugar followed by some lighter flavors of vanilla, cream, and almonds. The body is pretty thin for a stout and lacks viscosity and mouth feel. Decent flavor, but overall a little lacking.

12oz bottle from Pizz5116. Pours black with a small foamy tan head. Aroma of sweet cocoa, roasted malts, and vanilla extract. Taste is really watered down. Roasted malt, watered down coffee, cardboard, hints of vanilla. Aroma was nice, but overall this was pretty flavorless. Meh

Draft at the brewery. Pour is near black with a creamy tan head. Aroma and flavors are roasted malt, light chocolate and a touch of coffee. Not mind blowing but certainly very solid. Clean.

Bottle. A- Black licorice, tobacco, coffee, roasty, cocoa. A- Black color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Roasty, cocoa, anise, tobacco, coffee, malty. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- This was a pleasant surprise. Didnít expect much but got a lot. Nice rich and deep flavors with anise and tobacco seeming to come through the most on the nose and a complex taste. Enjoyed this one well enough.
