COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ’oatmeal’ in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! But the real secret is in our lager yeast. Most stouts are made using ale yeast, but we wanted ours to be a smooth as our lagers! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors.

Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma is roasty with chocolate notes. Flavor is quite roasty with hints of malt, chocolate, caramel, coffee, nuts, molasses, and brown sugar. Medium body with medium carbonation. Not a bad effort.

Thanks to my friend Ray for bringing this and some NG from the Midwest. Back Road Stout 12 oz poured into a pint glass. Dark brown to black color with a tan, lingering head. Carbonation reminds me of a nitro pour; tiny, countless bubbles. Smells of bitter chocolate, roast malt, thick caramel. Tastes a bit unrefined, with caramel and roast malt dominance. Would prefer a drier finish, but am overall pleased with this session stout.

Originally reviewed: 6/1/09. Pours s deep dark cola color with a popping fizzy tan head on top. This "pops" away to nothing very quickly. No lacing. Smells of cocoa, roasted coffee, and warm breads. Decent. Mouthfeel is a little too carbonated for an oatmeal stout. Not as creamy as I would have liked, but not harsh either. Flavor is of mild roasted cocoa, some bready malts, and some faint bitterness. All in all this is a pretty average beer. Not bad, but not that great.
