Pale Ale's on the coasts of this country are turning into hoppy monsters, but our beer is more mild, and about balance. It has enough bitterness to match the maltiness provided by the pale malt base. It gets its citrus zing from extensive dry-hopping with Cascade hops. This beer was first made in a few small test batches in 2003. The response was so incredibly positive, that it has worked it’s way into a year round beer. A hoppy IPA in the central plains... how exciting!

Bottle poured a hazy amber with a small lasting creamy amber head. Aromas of bread, earthiness, citrus and light pine. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, citrus and light earthiness with a crisp dry lingering bitter finish.

12oz bottle. Notch is maybe late July? Pours copper, offwhite head. Pine grass aroma, taste is big and hop bitter grass. Not a huge body. Nice enough.

12oz bottle, purchased from Brennan’s in Madison during GTMW. Notch in the bottle indicates June. Entirely hazy amber color. Thin khaki head. Leaves decent, thicker ridges of lace. Medium plus body. Smooth, tingly, kind of crisp lightly soft moderate strength carbonation. Light dry finish. Bigger bitter taste, light sweet. Mild caramel malt, kind of spicy. Piney hop. Pretty solid, enjoyable lighter-bodied IPA. Good bitterness, good bigger piney hop. A little 1-dimensional, but solid. Enjoyed with my sandwich, not really sold on the pairing though. As it goes, it drags a bit, loses it’s luster, but never becomes disappointing.

12 oz bottle. Looks like a hazy sweet tea. Has a small white ring. Aroma of citrus rinds, fruit esters, caramel and toffee. Citrus rinds , caramel, earth, and tobacco hit the palate. It’s a weird mix, but oddly interesting. Not great not horrible just ehh

bottle @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Deep amber color, long 1/2" ivory head, strings of lace. Taste is clear malt that grows a little sweeter in the palate, then suddenly has pine hops dropped on top of it, pretty much obliterating everything. An unusual balance, a little off, but then again, I keep drinking it.

On tap at the Millstream pub in the Amana Colonies. Near clear orange amber color with slight white head. Aroma is citrus and light malts. Taste has citrus, caramel, balanced toward the hops but not too bitter.

Medium amber, hazy with a decent amount of white foam. Aroma is a pleasant citrus and warm bread. Grainy mouthfeel and malty sweetness could use a better balance. I could swear there’s a slight film left behind in the finish.

I really wanted to like this one a bit more, being from Iowa, and not getting much millstream anymore. But, alas, it wasn’t very good, wonder how much corn was used in its production?
