COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

Thanks to MNovak for my first Iowa rating, 49th State.
Short 12oz bottle. Amber color, thin white head. Aroma of toasted grains, mostly fruity esters. Tastes of mixed berries under the malts. Well balanced of light, toasted grains, earthy bitter hops. Very well made. My 2400th USA Rating.<b/>

[Bottle] Pours a dark amber color with a creamy white head. Sweet caramel and molasses in the nose. More subtle notes of cinnamon and nutmeg in the nose. Heavy toasted malt flavor. Mild crisp hops and caramel malts blend well in this beer. Some cracker in there as well. Oily body. A nice beer.

Dark ruby pour with very minimal head. Aroma is asparagus and cough syrup. Flavor is more like a mix of veggies with some red cough syrup and a bit of caramel. Viscous finish with minimal carbonation.

Pour from a 12 oz bottle. Darke amber brew with big puffy head. Light aroma of sweet grains,- caramel malts, a little hay . Taste is dominated by a sweet maltiness from start to finish, with a little hoppiness rising at the end of the swallow. Palate is medium. Overall, a good brew but a little on the sweet side for my taste, even for a Vienna.

Pretty standard amber; it strikes me that the length of the commercial description may be inversely related to the depth of flavors--I can’t think that this needs this much of a write-up: it’s just your basic "broad appeal" beer. Bottle.

On tap @ Millstream. Reddish orange appearance with a white head. Slightly bushy hoppy, amber lager nose. Fairly hoppy, caramel amber malty flavor. Sweet, light nutty finish.

Millstream’s flagship Schild Brau Amber is a Vienna style lager. Deep copper in color, it pours lovely with a full head that sticks to the glass as you sip. The initial sip is malty and sweet (for a lager), with a gentle rolling bite of bittering hops. With another swirl of the glass and a sample sip or two, there’s a spicy herbal aroma at the nose--I suspect dry-hopping--that opens up a small dinner party in your mouth ...not the Animal House type, but the cocktails and good conversation type of party. The layers are complex and interesting. Very clean, well balanced with an excellent body for two-row malt. Quite simply, this is outstanding. Serving type: bottle

Good malt heft to it, one of the least flashy beers out there, but doesn’t mean that the beer isn’t good.

Bottle. Clear brownish orange pour with a thin white head. Aroma of malt and earth. Taste is malt, caramel, and just a touch of hop. Decent stuff.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2010 Bottle. A - Light, crisp copper, orange color. Smaller than average, foamy, bubbly, active head. Below average retention with just a small patch of lace left. S- A lot of toasted malt with caramel and toffee coming out strong. Also a bunch of apple and floral aromas comes out. Hints of toasted bread, but not much. T - Similar to the nose with a lot of toasted caramel malt and plenty of apple. Some spicy, earthy hops along with some herbal and floral hops as well. They definitely play second fiddle to the caramel malt though. Some mineral and toasted bready flavors come out, but they are definitely an after thought. Some grainy and earthy/nutty flavors mid to finish sip. M - Lighter side of medium body with around average carbonation. Fairly crisp with a sticky feel. D - Pretty drinkable beer with a decent mix of flavors. Pretty standard for the style. Notes: An average/middle of the road beer. Not bad but not outstanding. A lot of malty flavor with a decent hop flavor.
