The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

On tap in Amana at the Ronneburg Restaurant. Poured a rich copper color with a nice light tan head that lasted quite a while and left good lacing. Roasted malts in the nose and other aromas of carmel and slght hops. Decent mouthfeel and a solid malt flaror. Low carbonation makes this a smooth and fairly enjoyable brew.

Big thanks to Secret Santa Eve for this one! Nice coppery amber appearance, decent head fades into a ring. Very faint aroma of light malt. Pleasant biscuit flavor, with a slightly grassy and floral hop finish. Not bad at all, an enjoyable easy drinker.

A delicious and very true to style old world Vienna. This has a nice malty nose & a good flavor with a well balanced hop bitterness. Very easy drinking (I could drink this all night) It is a very nice deep red color that has a nice head and leaves a good lace.

Bottled in December 04 (slightly before I picked it up at the brewery in Amana). This one was pretty darn good on tap at the brewery. Appearance: Reddish/amber color. Frothy, creamy, thick white head. Lots of carbonation. Excellent lacing. Aroma: very herbal, buttery. Flavor: Buttery, nutty, grainy. Well blended. Palate: Thin. A bit watery. Lingering sweetness.

Pour is a dark red with a small white head. Aroma is lagery with a bit of caramel in there. Flavor is malty but dull all over. Really watery in the end and not a good rep of the style.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2005 ReRate-bottle-pours a copper hue with a fizzy white head. sweet apple, malty, aroma that has notes of caramel with notes of german funky yeast lager qualities. farily sweet, almost fruity. the fizzy body here is just not that great i admit. tap at old chicago-iowa city, IA-pours a light copper hue with minimal white head-sweet malty aroma and some earthy notes-flavors are sweet, malty and earthy with some slight hop notes. a decent amber ale.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear amber colored body with an orange tint. Finger-width, frothy, tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is some toasted cereal grains with a light caramel and some mild grassy fruits. Flavor is similar. Grainy, toasty cereals and some caramel with a touch of dough. More grassy, crisp citrus and melon fruits balance nicely before some sweet nuts come out. Finishes dry and fairly sweet with a light bitterness. Fruity, sweet malty aftertaste with a hint of grass for a medium length duration. Light body and smooth with a clean, moderate carbonation. Overall, a decent vienna lager. Not the most impressive, but easy drinking and clean with a nice, crisp flavor. I could do a few of these.

Reddish amber color with a beige head. Aroma is tinny with nuts and light floral hops. Taste is mostly toasted malts with a buttery flavor. Just a bit sweet for my liking.
