The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

Amber with a medium white head. Aroma of light caramel , sweet malts and light German hops. Taste is pretty light too, mostly of sweet caramel with a little hop character to balance it out. A drinkable and forgettable Vienna.

Light burnt orange color with very little white head. Aroma of dough and some stale malt. Crisp, albeit watery flavor with some notes of caramel and dough. A bit of Hallertau hops in the finish. Pretty bland and nondeScript.

A delicious and very true to style old world Vienna. This has a nice malty nose & a good flavor with a well balanced hop bitterness. Very easy drinking (I could drink this all night) It is a very nice deep red color that has a nice head and leaves a good lace.

Pour is a dark red with a small white head. Aroma is lagery with a bit of caramel in there. Flavor is malty but dull all over. Really watery in the end and not a good rep of the style.

Had it on tap at Dublin Underground in Iowa City. Deep copper color with a thin head. Spicy nose and flavor with a hint of hoppy flavor and bitterness. Dry finish. Solid brew without being flashy.

Golden amber, little head w/ some spots of lace. Typical Millstream character--sweet w/o much in the way of hops. Drinkable but like all their beers there’s nothing special.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2006 This is the flagship brew at Millstream. It is worth stopping for a six-pack when traveling across Iowa. Very surprising lager flavor especially if allowed to warm a little. UPDATE 1/26/6: Still a fine beer! Nice beautiful dark amber with a yellowish-beige head. Rich caramel malt aroma. Nice medium malt body with a mild carbonation and a clean crisp finish. Hop bitterness is low, but provides what it needs to to balance the beer. Well made. While this beer has color, it is indeed a light lager and needs to be consumed fresh. It may not survive well in the Ratebeerian Trader’s basement, so judge the low ratings accordingly.

Big thanks to Secret Santa Eve for this one! Nice coppery amber appearance, decent head fades into a ring. Very faint aroma of light malt. Pleasant biscuit flavor, with a slightly grassy and floral hop finish. Not bad at all, an enjoyable easy drinker.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2005 ReRate-bottle-pours a copper hue with a fizzy white head. sweet apple, malty, aroma that has notes of caramel with notes of german funky yeast lager qualities. farily sweet, almost fruity. the fizzy body here is just not that great i admit. tap at old chicago-iowa city, IA-pours a light copper hue with minimal white head-sweet malty aroma and some earthy notes-flavors are sweet, malty and earthy with some slight hop notes. a decent amber ale.
