COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

Good malt heft to it, one of the least flashy beers out there, but doesn’t mean that the beer isn’t good.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2005 ReRate-bottle-pours a copper hue with a fizzy white head. sweet apple, malty, aroma that has notes of caramel with notes of german funky yeast lager qualities. farily sweet, almost fruity. the fizzy body here is just not that great i admit. tap at old chicago-iowa city, IA-pours a light copper hue with minimal white head-sweet malty aroma and some earthy notes-flavors are sweet, malty and earthy with some slight hop notes. a decent amber ale.

Very nice little lager. Nice dark amber-brown body topped by an ok head. Aroma has a touch of corn at the beginning of the aroma, but that fades quickly. A touch of caramel and a hint of sweetness keep this from getting too boring. Very clean flavor, but not too bland. Very drinkable and a nice example of the style.

Thanks to heemer77 for bringing the sampler of Millstreams to TN! This one starts with a large creamy head on a hazy, medium orange amber brew. Light malt aroma with a whiff of hop perfume in the back. Lightly sweet with a good malt flavor. Well done V/O/M.

Pour is a dark red with a small white head. Aroma is lagery with a bit of caramel in there. Flavor is malty but dull all over. Really watery in the end and not a good rep of the style.

12oz bottle. Rating #185. Dark amber with a slight haze and a small light beige head. Sweet raisin aroma, light toast and a bit of caramel. Mild flavor, a bit of caramel and toast with some graininess. (2385)

Re-Rate 12/02/02: Translucent deep copper color on the pour, the head minimal, the lace sparse. The nose is malt, sweet; hints of caramel of maple syrup more like it. Front is malt; the top skeletally thin, the finish is weak and waterish, middling carbonation, minimal hops not much of a beer actually.

Didn’t realize I hadn’t rated this yet. 12oz notched on S for September. Pours a clear orange with a few reddish highlights and a quickly fading minimal beige head. Aroma of toasted malts, walnuts, caramel malts, and a bit of earthy hops. Fairly sweet smelling. Flavor adds a bit of grassiness and very little bitterness--again fairly sweet. Light to medium body with low carbonation. I could session at least a few of these without getting bored.

Bottled. Okay, call me prejudiced because I’m from Iowa, which doesn’t have a major brewing scene, but this is one of the best “ambers” I‘ve had. Has a nice malty smell and pours a thick brownish head over an excellent coppery, bubbly body. There's a big caramel and brown sugar maltiness, with the right balance of German hops to keep it from getting too cloying. Won a Bronze at GABF, where it competed as a Vienna, and at the North American Brewers Association where it competed as a Mârzen. Go figure. Just a short detour off I-80 at the Colonies.

12 oz bottle coutsey of pepsican. Aroma had some spicey bitter and toasted grains. Amber body with decent head. Flavor was sweet bitter to start with. Flavor got more of a malted caramel from middle to finish with a sweet mild bitterness aftertaste. Decent brew and first from Iowa rated.
