The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

Didn’t realize I hadn’t rated this yet. 12oz notched on S for September. Pours a clear orange with a few reddish highlights and a quickly fading minimal beige head. Aroma of toasted malts, walnuts, caramel malts, and a bit of earthy hops. Fairly sweet smelling. Flavor adds a bit of grassiness and very little bitterness--again fairly sweet. Light to medium body with low carbonation. I could session at least a few of these without getting bored.

5/31/2007: Rating #100 for this beer... Millstream Schild Brau Amber Lager pours a nice amber color with a moderate level of carbonation. The initial small foamy beige head is gone in a flash. The aroma is sweet caramel malt. The flavor is chewy caramel malt, something lightly nutty (walnuts?), and some fruit (apple) toward the finish. There is some mild bitterness in the finish to round out this beer since it is fairly sweet overall. The body is medium with a smooth, soft palate. Schild Brau Amber is pretty goods and gets better with each drink as it warms up. 12 oz bottle (notched S for September) as a bonus in a trade from iowaherkeye. Thanks Joey!

12 oz bottle-Trade w/pepsican. Pours a clear amber color w/a slight head & good lacing. Roasted malt aroma. Flavors of roasted malt, toffee, caramel, & bread dough. Solid, easy drinking brew, more of an everyday drinking Amber Lager (they call it a Lager), not one of those special, one off, Oktoberfests. Very Yuenglingish! Definite session brew, slight bitter finish. Thanks for this one Andy!

Appearance: Pours a clear amber body with a thin, bubbly white head. Smell: Altogether mild aroma of toasted malts with light notes of apple and flowers. Taste: Toasty maltiness with a mild sweetness and a hint of red apple peel. Vaguely floral hop character with little bitterness provided. Crisp finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A fine, easy-drinking beer. Why, it’s schild’s play!
