COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Shield beer' in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.

An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has primary notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and caramel as well as lighter notes of wheat bread, alcohol, and bread - reminds me of a bock. love the maltyness of this brew

12oz bottle, from Brennanís in Madison. Purchased during GTMW. June is notched on the label. Mostly clear darker amber color. Thin off-white head. Leaves decent dots and ropes of lace. Caramel malt and dark fruit dominate flavor. Some toastiness, hints of chocolate. Medium body. Kind of slick texture. Kind of soft, rougher carbonation. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter, light weird bite at the end. Gets better as it sits and warms up a bit, but still sort of overly malty and sweet.

bottle @ Johnís Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Hazy medium orange amber with a good ivory head that drops to a light cover, tiny dots of lace. Taste is semi-sweet caramel malt that moves directly through the palate to a finish that is more fizz than it is hops. Either way, itís enough to balance. Not a big deal, but drinkable.

5/04/14 at Red Cow in Minneapolis, on tap in pint glass. Thick head fades in time. This place is dark but my best guess is dark copper/amber in color. Hardly any aroma whatsoever but what is there is slightly citrusy. The longer it sits the more pronounced the aroma becomes. Aroma is much better 10 mins in. It looks beautiful in the glass. Smooth with a slight tang at the finish. Tasty. Mild but with just enough interest. A good session beer. I would order another. ---Rated via the Gridfather

On tap at the Cedar Rapids airport . Clear dark amber. Crisp malty taste with a nice earthy bitter linger. Nicely carbonated. This is a solid Midwest beer in the style of a German Amber,

On tap at the brewery. Amber and clear appearance with an off-white, light tan head. Aroma of chocolate, caramelized malts, earthy hops, light spices and toffee. Similar flavor, toasted/roasted malts and a smooth, crisp medium body. Wow.

This amber lager has a slightly coppery hue that is rather lovely. Gotta love that even, robust head, too. The aroma hints at warm caramel and slightly smoky malt. The taste reveals a lot of sweetness thatís tempered by some nuttiness. I feel that lagers like this are often overlooked. While an amber lager doesnít have the same flavor profile or complexity of an ale, good lagers should have a spot in every beer loverís heart. This one is definitely worthy of consideration. Schild Brau may not blow your mind, but itís a solid example of the style.

Bottle, upping my Iowa cred. Lots of caramel on the nose, grainy and pretty plain. Enjoyable to drink, nothing special here. Not a fan of the style really.
