3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask - The White Lion, Norwich. Pours black with a fine frothy beige head. Sweet roasted malt aromas, some dry coffee tones and a bit of dark fruit. Initial fruit flavours leading to dry roasty malt notes and a coffee tone finishing with liquorice and a lasting chocolate aftertaste. A relatively soft mouthfeel but bit lacking in the body department for a stout.

Cask@Pembury Tavern. Deep ambery brown colour, small brown head. Aroma is lots of butter, some roasted malt and black coffee. Flavour is roasted malts, toffee, mild butter and also some black coffee. Quite strange at first, but then turns quite mellow and balanced.

Cask Conditioned at The Pembury Tavern, London
Dark brown color, almost black. Light chocolate aroma. Round body, with a good and smooth mix of caramel and chocolate, very light instant coffee at the end. Simple but good.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask. At the Pembury Tavern. Cloudy red-brown with a small off-white head. A nice dry herbal aroma, slightly sour, but a surprisingly weak malt/roast profile. There’s decently light cocoa roast maltiness in the flavour, but the sourness seems a bit odd - "deeply flavoured oat stout" - hmm, not by my way of reckoning, no. The body was nice and thick though (even if I could see through it easily), and it was nice and slick on the tongue, with acidity in the finish that seemed to work against what roastiness there was - and I really got no oat from it at all. In fact, I found that while there was more than acceptable roast in the taste initially, it faded very quickly and left me thinking mostly "sour."

Half pint hand-pulled and served at the right drinking temperature at The Pembury Tavern in Hackney. Dark body colour with a small tan head. Smell of malt and liquorice. Roasted cocoa malts in flavour with a touch of coffee tartness in the ending. Rather soft palate (12.08.2008).

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask at Coventry Beer Festival 08. Very dark brown or black. Cocoa aroma with a fruity background pear hint. Cocoa continues in the taste with ashy, burnt bitterness and some liquorice. Didn’t like it as much as I thought I would and I’m not really sure why.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cask conditioned - handpump - Malt Shovel Northampton. A black beer with no head. The aroma is heavy on the chocolate with roasty, smoky notes in the background. There is plenty of chocolate in the taste, but dusty and thick. Sweet and sour notes. Definitely has an oatmeal feel to it. Lovely and moreish. Would be called a sweet stout in USA.
