arjoseph (514), Marshall, Wisconsin, USA Oct 9, 2006 On tap at the brewpub. I’ll go ahead and be the lowest rating on this one so far. Not a bad beer, but not approaching a 4.0. Looks black with an impressive creamy firm head, tan, and lasting at 1". The head sticks to the side like a thick sheet of chamois-like lace. The head feels fluffy against the upper lip as the beer flows underneath with medium to full body. The first sip evidences milk chocolate lingering in the finish. Further examination: initial burst of fleeting confectioner’s sweetness gives way to creamy liquid roastiness in the flavor, but the least dry roastiness I have ever experienced. There’s also unsweet chocolate powder, which should also be dry but also gets subsumed in the milky creaminess. Under that is a molasses flaovor mixed with some weird rancid oatmeal funk that is not good at all. As I continued to drink the beer, the funk became the only thing I could focus on; it really detracted from the experience. Luckily, the palate was so insistently creamy that I still enjoyed drinking it. As it warmed, the finish became slightly musty oatmeal, which accentuated the off flavor in the body. Hops were flat and biting on the back of the sides of the tongue. Smelled bready, musty, like oatmeal and cream. DavidP (1698), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Sep 26, 2005 Black body under a tan nitro head. The chocolatey, dark malt aroma has sort of a Nesquick thing. Thick, generous lacing. Milk chocolate and light coffee in the flavor, smooth sweet creaminess throughout. Coffee bitterness and a light fruity hoppness in the finish. A wonderfully velvety, rich, sweet beer. THIS is what I think a sweet stout ought to taste like. 1FastSTi (2357), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Sep 25, 2005 Updated: Jul 29, 2006This one’s on cask. It pours to a thick, dense, fully lasting nitro tan head. The body is a dark brown/purple (lighting?). The beer has a very strong aroma. Chocolate, espresso, light milk. Thick dense lacing on the glass. The flavor is very nice milk, bakers, and dark chocolates. The palate is rich, creamy, medium-full body. Light dryness. Holy cow! How haven’t they sold out of this?!?!?! Get it while you can! Originally sampled on 8/25/05. 7, 5, 8, 8, 17 = 4.2.
Had it again on 7/29/06. Was listed as Mother’s Milk Stout, but I’m sure it was the same stuff. The beer pours to a black body with a lasting foamy brown head. The aroma is heavy chocolate, anise, lactose. The flavor is deep chocolate, oatmeal, milk. I swear there is bourbon in this. Dry roasty malt. The palate is slick, pretty flat, medium bodied. Goes down really smoothly. Wow. 8, 4, 9, 4, 17 = 4.2. Interesting... still a 4.2 but for different reasons. They should brew this year round. JPDIPSO (4189), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Sep 23, 2005 Near opaque black color with a thick 1/2 inch of tight light tan bubbles. Roasted malt, mild coffee and dark chocolate dominate the aromas. Full feel and mild on the palate. Plenty of malt adrift in this one with roasted malts and dark chocolate flavors. Only a very light lactic component. Hops are mild, but lavender invades the senses in the finish and linger. A very enjoyable stout.
