3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, - JUL 26, 2007
My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts and thin caramel brethren laxly meet and never agree on a common goal. This lightly tart, lean Porter remains a decent dark ale, but it is overshadowed by its Minamishinsyu acolytes.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam laces atop the burgundy-sleeved black.
-A pleasant fruitiness recalls raisins.
-The soft effervescence helps drinkability.
-Roastiness returns in the finale, but doesn’t have much help.
-Earthiness attempts to link the caramel and roastiness, sometimes succeeds.
-Not much of a success as a Porter imho, but you can’t say this is not well brewed.
On tap at the brewery restaurant.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 KyotoLefty (3762) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JAN 24, 2012
Draught at Beer Republic. Jet black, glowing, very smooth, fine head. Roasty chocolate nose, charcoal and coffee. Light fruit. Well roasted, clean flavor, with dark chocolate, coffee, and wood. Bitter and straight-forward. Nice, but a bit simple. Smooth, medium body.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Jukkabro (3473) - Tampere, FINLAND - FEB 18, 2010
Black colored with little beige head. Caramelly and sweet roasted aroma with thin licorice, somehow tangy still. Thin to medium bodied. Flavor is more dry in start with licorice and roastiness too, aftertaste has nice hops with grassy notes.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TimE (2068) - Tokyo, JAPAN - JUN 25, 2007
Dark brown color. Sweet chocolate malty nose with just a faint hint of dark fruit and brownies. Mouth is medium, but flavors are a bit too muted. Dry semi-sweet finish that had me thinking brownies, but I was reaching for something. Decent, but not great.
