2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Almost pitch black, huge tan head, lots of lacing. No distingtive aroma. Very sweet, chocolate, syrup, sugar, slightly roasted malt on the back end. Too sweet, even if there is any hops in it, sweetness overpowers it. Pass it...

750 ml bottle from Trader Joes. Pours a dark black color with a medium tan head. A light nose of cocoa and anise. The flavor is dry, chocolate, vanilla bean, some tobacco. Decent brew. This is an alternate name of an alternate...does it really exist?

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
No faults with the appearance, black with a thick brown head. Roastiness, chocolates, and some tang to the aroma, fairly pleasant. Burnt coffee and chocolate are prominent in the flavor. A bit of a letdown, everything doesn’t seem to mix well. Aftertaste of charred chocolate. Feels a bit thin in the mouth.
(Sold as a 22 oz "Boatswain Chocolate Stout" for about $2.50 at the Cambridge Trader Joe’s, ratebeer redirected me two times to get to this one)

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
650ml Bottle from Depot as Bad Hare Chocolate Stout 5.5%. Dark, dark brownish copper poor with a weak tan foam that bubbles away super quickly. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, and caramel. Taste is roast malts, with a hint of caramel sweetness. Carbonated mouthfeel for a stout, but finish is dry, quite bitter, and satisfying

2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Boatswain Chocolate Stout from Trader Joe’s, $1.99/22 oz. You can hide a lot of flaws behind a big black beer, almost. The powdered cocoa and raw sugar don’t quite mask the burnt, rancid figs, which I believe is their house flavor. There are a few pleasing notes. The expected stouty chocolate and coffee are in there. But, too little, too late. Don’t Buy It. That will only encourage people to make more bad beer.
