2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
22oz served into a snifter.
A - Pours very dark brown, almost completely opaque. 1 finger of brown head with average retention and decent lacing.
S - Big chocolate aroma, roasted malts, alcohol comes through with hints of berries and grapes.
T - Follows the nose but the chocolate seems very artificial tasting. Acidic fruit mixes with roasted malt and fruity chemical flavor.
M - Moderate prickly carbonation, medium feel.
This is heavy on the chocolate but the flavor seems artificial and the fruity chemical tartness only worsened as it warmed. $2.99 for a bomber is still not worth it.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
The chocolate comes through a lot more in the aroma than the taste. Flavor is certainly sweet, but less chocolate than milky brown sugar.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
~Strong Milk chocolate aroma with carmel and bread.
~Pours black with quickly disappearing brown head
~Rich bready malt flavor with chocolate and light carmel throughout with roast and a sharp lasting bitterness.
~Medium bodied, medium high CO2, Roasty bitter finish.
~Good beer, really enjoyed the aroma. Could drink a few of these. The bottle I got I think was old as I got some papery notes.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22oz bottle labeled as Boatswain Chocolate Stout. First thing I need to make clear is that this only cost $2.29 at Trader Joe’s. While this might not be any thing spectacular it is only $2.29 for a large bottle. This is a decent chocolate stout, easy drinking, nothing over the top with alcohol levels and, did I mention the price? This stuff is only $2.29 at TJs.

Pours pitch black small tan head, some minor lace. Smells malty, but mostly like sweet chocolate. Tastes sweet and a little bitter, but mainly sweet malt.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
22oz bottle in a snifter. Pours black with a lacy, tan head. Aroma of a stout that has gone bad just before the addition of fake chocolate. Flavor the same with a weird bitterness at the end. Average texture. No thanks.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Boatswain Chocolate Stout is a black ale with a slightly reddish cast. The smooth, dense, brown head has decent retention. It has a roasted aroma with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and toffee. It feels smooth and full bodied with a clean, dry finish. A little grit is left on the teeth. There’s a hint of sweetness, but it’s dry overall. The chocolate flavor is very dark and pretty subtle. There’s a bit of caramel going on mid-taste. The chocolate is probably most prominent in the dusty aftertaste. The bitterness is very subdued and is just enough to balance things out. This is a very solid, drinkable and enjoyable stout.

Boatswain chocolate stout. 650ml bottle. I can smell the chocolate before even bringing the glass to my nose. Dark color. Aroma is roasty and dark chocolate. Almost a burnt flavor. Sharp carbonation.Different. Odd mix, but tastey.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22oz bottle: pours a mostly opaque black with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Has a lightly sweet toasted caramel and cocoa nose. Starts with average fullness and light carbonation with mild caramel malty sweetness and a healthy dose of grassy bittering hops before a slightly sugary bittersweet finish. Could be a little more well-balanced and complex.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Marketed as Boatswain for Trader Joe’s.
Strong cocoa nose that dominates, nearly masking the malt.
Sweet flavor - almost too sweet for me. It would be good with dessert.
Creamy mouth-feel. Mild carbonation.
Pretty standard chocolate stout. Nothing spectacular.
