COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head and smell of toasted coffee and light cocoa. It has a pronounced roasted coffee flavour with slightly sweet cocoa notes concluding with a subtle, well balanced, hop bitterness.

Aroma is roasted malts and fruit, not much chocolate in there. The flavor is fruit/berries, malts and a rather mild chocolate flavor. Not as much chocolate as expected, a relatively decent stout but not what it needs to be.

purchased from Trader Joeís under the moniker Boatswain Chocolate Stout. 2$ for a 22; thatís enough to get me excited. If itís as good as their 2$ wine, then weíre in business (itís not quite that good, in my opinion.) Pours black with light warm brown head, thick and fizzy, reducing to an attractive film. Aroma is grass, sweet grain, light bbq/smokey wood and cocao. Has a refreshing after-rain smell that Iíve gotten in stouts before; Iím neutral on that smell. Body is a bit thin; carbonation is moderate and fairly coarse, still a bit blanket-like. Flavor has quite a bit of that woody, smoke/bbq. roast, caramel, and cocoa are all of less intensity, making the flavor profile seem a bit thin and weak. Maybe some grassy hops in there, and some strawberry (from the yeast?) Minimal bitterness; very watery aftertaste in light of this.

I poured a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Extremely dark black body for the low weight. Forms a large, light brown foamy head which dissipates rather quickly but leaves minor lacing on the glass.

Smell: Mild nose with a very generic pub stout scent. No chocolate aroma, but a definite twangy/metallic scent.

Taste: I didnít think it was possible to screw up a chocolate stout, but apparently Trader Joeís contract brewed "Boatswain" line made by the Minhas Craft Brewery managed to do it. This is neither chocolaty nor stouty, but more like a failed homebrew experiment. Thatís not to say itís horrible or undrinkable, but well below average. Twangy, astringent, metallic flavors should not be found in this type of beer.

It begins rather mild with a typical pub-style stout or porter flavor. Itís actually closer to a dark mild rather than a stout since thereís little roasted malt flavor and definitely no chocolate. A hint of bitterness through the middle and a big finish of a sour, metallic, grainy taste akin to a malt liquor. The aftertaste is slightly dry, but thankfully mostly clean. I initially chalked these off-flavors up to the beer being too cold so I let it warm up but it actually got worse. In fact, the more I drank the less I liked it. In short, this is the worst chocolate stout Iíve ever had.

Drinkability: With a very thin, flat, watery mouthfeel and texture, Boatswain Chocolate Stout is at least easy to drink. It goes down very smooth which is pretty much the only positive feature of this brew. At 5.4% ABV I can see why the palate is rather weak. Drinking an entire bomber yourself wouldnít be impossible, but the objectionable palate makes it a challenge.

Nose is chocolate, chalk, and soap, with a smokiness that comes on more as I drink it. Sweetish and burnt. Watery mouthfeel. Not very good.

Bomber shared by bro, cold. 11MR12. Deep brown-black with a large mocha head. Tight nose, sorta tangy, some coffee and choc notes, mild fruitiness and a touch of caramel, a little vinous, not bad. Medium body, moderate eff., a touch thinner than expected. Pleasant chocolate and vanilla notes, a touch of coconut, still kinda tangy and a little bit harsh, had better; off dry with minimal bitterness and a fairly nice black chocolate/coffee, somewhat fruity finish. Fair.

Completely black, dirty brown head. Not much in the nose at all. Some chocolate, not as pronounced as I thought it would be. Too bitter. Lots of carbonation. Kinda thin on flavor. Light to medium mouthfeel. Overall, an average effort. 070312

Bottle: The aroma consists of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, vanilla, and a touch of roast. It pours a dark brown with some faint orange highlights and a small beige head. The flavor starts with a quick dose of sugary chocolate. The finish has some light roast and cream. Itís medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation.

Purchased from Trader Joes. labeled as Rhinelander Chocolate Stout. The aroma is chocolate, raisins/prunes, roast. The appearance is deep black, light tan head. The flavor is chcolate, raisins, brown sugar, slight gypsum. The finish is chocolate, pine, gypsum. Medium/thick in body, creamy mouthfeel. Pretty good. Factor in the $1.99 ffor a bomber price tag, and itís a total winner.

I was worried that this might be too chocolately but I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. Not bad. Dark. Stormy. Smokey. What I expected and hoped. I like the label.

Poured into a pint glass. 3.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of frothy light brown head. Retention is lacking, but a decent amount of lacing is left. 3.0 S: Light roastiness with cocoa powder. Smells good, but is boring. Lightly tangy. 2.0 T: Lightly roasty, cocoa powder, and cooked vegetables. Itís bad, but itís not unthinkably horrid. 2.0 M: Super light body. Carbonation is right. Not creamy at all, just thin. 2.0 D: Again Minhas has disappointed. While this is better than the Imperial Jack, itís still something Iíd never like to drink again.
