2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Best summarized as "eh" when it comes to stouts. Pours a deep brown with thin tan head, minimal lacing. Aroma is strong of cheap chocolate. To be exact, I felt like I was indulging myself in horrible Palmer chocolate. Didn’t have anything going for it other than the price.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle BWCS. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate toasted malt and chocolate aroma. Medium chocolate sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a soft beer that just met my expectations.

Always suspicious of BWBs. No, not BBWs, even if there is reason to be. BWBs – “brewed with” beers. The fruity, barely beer category is littered with these obvious offerings. And somewhere lurking behind there always seems to be some brew conglomerate doing it and doing it poorly. I’ve never heard of Rhinelander (or Minhas or whatever it used to be and can’t be bothered to explain on its website) but my local Trader Joe’s is full of em. And this isn’t so obvious, or poorly done.
STYLE: American Stout
LOOK: We’re not breaking any ground here. Dark but not oily with a brown-butter head.
NOSE: That delicate balance of sweet and bitter and tang. Chocolate cake, vanilla, subtle orange, medium roast coffee.
MOUTH: If it’s possible, almost too easy drinking. I want and indeed need a little bitter bite, preferably at the middle of the end. Just-warm coffee, wisp of smoke, chocolate. Not a game-changer, just solid.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2013 Pours black with a tan was that dissipates. Nice lacing but not sticky. Smells of cocoa and coffee. Tastes cocoa up front with strong roast, finished with tangy hops. Pretty good but I’ve had better.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Trader Joes Boatswain Chocolate Stout. Looks very attractive, like an imperial stout. Nose is sweet, roasted and full of chocolate. Taste is woody, roasted, a bit of smoke, toasted malt and chocolate. Really good.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Strong chocolate. Dark black pour. Tan head. Choc/coffee, alcohol flavor though not a strong beer, 5.4%. Finish is a bit like sweet red wine. Thin texture and bubbly. Alias-Trader joes: Boatswain Chocolate Stout.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample (as Boatswain Chocolate Stout) at the 5th Annual Coldest Day of the Year Stout Tasting on 01/26/2013: Dark brownish pour with a medium thin beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, malt and a bit of coffee. Light-bodied with a roasty character and flavors of chocolate malt and mild coffee. The finish is sweet with a short chocolate aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This beer pours an amazingly rich deep black color with a chocolate milk colored head. It has a rich dark chocolate aroma. It has a slightly more bitter taste than most stouts but is still a good flavorful beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22 oz Bottle. Pours opaque black/brown with a thin cocoa head. There is a touch of cocoa in the aroma, but more roasted coffee than anything. Same for the flavor. Good, but I was expecting better cocoa flavor and less coffee.
