2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
650 ml bottle
At $2.99 a bomber this was a low risk beer to try. It was not that great either but considering the price point it did manage to exceed my expectations. Maybe at some point when the budget runs low I will try the others. For now though I am content to continue to burn through a large backlog and visit brewpubs.
Aroma / Appearance - Oily brown the color of brackish water this pours relatively fluid for a stout. A sandy head is the color of powered hot chocolate. Plums, hot chocolate, and blackberry jam on white toast perk up the senses although the combination is mild for a stout.
Flavor / Palate - Watery and overcarbonated it is obvious that the appearance is better than the experience. An ephemeral bitterness teases the throat like Hershey’s kisses. Like chocolate infused flat cola it is sweet and drinkable without being interesting. The only reason to pick this up is if you are on a tight budget and want something better than macro beers.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Boatswain Chocolate Stout bottle: Aroma and flavor up front isn’t so bad, but it’s fleeting and it quickly goes downhill from there. For one, it’s loaded with plastic-like, synthetic-tasting flavors. Chocolate note tasted like it was from an extract, even though it says its brewed with cocoa powder. And for two, it was far too sweet and cloying. Sadly, it this one was a drain pour for me.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
deep black color with a decent tan head. Light aroma of roasted grain and dark malt sweetness. Flavor is very dark roasted malt and a bit of cocoa. On the full side of medium bodied, the finish is dark, almost burnt malt and a residual sour bitterness. A bit one dimensional and it won’t win any awards but the price is right and it’s a good hit of roasted malt so you could do worse.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Not good. This was a drain pour. Thin, watery, weak, bland. Nothing really happening with this beer. Very disappointing. Not good.

Heidel House Brewfest. Deep brown/black. Aroma of lightly roasted malts, cocoa, some dark fruit. Solid cocoa powder/bakers chocolate with some roast. Residual unsweetened chocolate. All-in-all, not that bad.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber from Fresh & Easy in Vacaville, CA . Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is primarily cocoa, but there’s a hint of burnt malt. Full bodied. Flavor is largely cocoa, but there’s an ashy burnt malt accompaniment which is fairly smooth. Quite drinkable.
Earlier Rating: 12/13/2011 Total Score: 3.4

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Rating Boatswain Chocolate Stout variation from Trader Joe’s. Color is black with a decent size brown head that fades to a thin layer. Aroma is fairly mild with basically just roasted malt coming through. Flavor is mild and chocolatey with a nice roasted character throughout. Medium bodied with a fairly creamy mouthfeel, but there is a slightly metallic character present. Overall this stout is OK, nothing spectacular, but certainly not a drain pour either. Considering this bomber was $1.99 at Trader Joe’s, I can’t complain very much.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from trader Joes under Boatswain alias. Poured a dark brown color with a medium to large light brown head. ARoma of chocolate, caramel. must, touches of fruit and minerals. Flavor was a bit surprising and good. Touch of smoky roastedness/coffee with a mild chocolate presence. A touch of hops. Fairly straightforward, but better than I expected for 2 bucks. Solid beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours very dark brown with a huge foamy tan head and a chocolate and a treacle aroma. There is a chocolate and molasses flavor with a slightly bitter chalky finish. Not bad.
Earlier Rating: 12/2/2011 Total Score: 3.1
Bottle from Trader Joe’s Sacramento. Pours dark brown with a rich tan head and a strong treacle aroma. There is a chocolate and coffee flavor that finishes a bit soapy and bitter. Looks good, smells good, but the flavor leaves a lot to be desired.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
This was a lot better than I expected. Coffee and chocolate balance with some bitterness. Much better than the Boatswain DIPA.
