As Rhinelander Chocolate Bunny Stout: A deep dark stout with a thick lacing and frothy dark brown head. In aroma, sweet milk chocolate with vanilla and solvents. In mouth, a sweet chocolate with chalky notes, a bit watery and plain. On tap at Istmus Beer and Cheese Fest, Jan 19 2012.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Poured from a large bottle into a trumpet glass to drink. The beer had a black-brown color with a dark brown hue and an average-sized, foamy and creamy, dark tan head with modest retention, and very good cling and lacing. The aroma was a roasty cocoa and chocolate blend with touches of coffee, and some earthy and grainy hops with light bread and toasty effects. It had a bitter-sweet cocoa flavor with sour and bitter touches of earth and grainy, along with a bread and barley component. It had a fairly wet and creamy body with average carbonation, and was watery with a below average thickness.

22 oz bottle with a Boatswain label from TJ’s served in a De Koninck snifter at about 55F. Pours a very dark brown, clear but looks black in the glass excepting the brown edges. The dark tan head has decent retention and leaves good lacing. Plenty of dark and medium chocolate in both the aroma and the flavor. A hint of licorice lingers into the slightly smoky aftertaste. Creamy smooth medium-full body with excellent carbonation.

2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
caramel, alcohol, chocolate, black, clear, minimal head, tan foam, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour, light body, thin feel, slick feel, flat, bitter
650ml bottle pours dark black with almost no head. Faint caramel/biscuit/cocoa aroma. Taste is predominantly sweet with very faint bitterness of cocoa. Bitterness of 66 IBU advertised - don’t think so Mr. Minhas. Cocoa flavour does intensify in the aftertaste a bit, but does not linger. Watery thin mouthfeel with a slight slickness on the tongue. Quite gassy beer after the swallow and a light alcohol warmth. I would have to say that it isn’t a bad brew, but would prefer chocolate malt to cocoa powder and adjunct sugar sweetness.

Bottle from Trader Joe’s in Rochester NY under Boatswain chocolate stout. The aroma consists of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, coffee, and a touch of roast. It pours a dark brown with some faint orange highlights and a small beige head. The flavor starts with a quick dose of coffee and then some chocolate. The finish has some coffee and cream. It’s medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation. This has more coffee than chocolate.

Draft @ Minhas. Pours black with minimal head. Light roasty chocolate. Pretty good. One of the better Minhas beers out there.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Had as Boatswain Chocolate Stout. Comes out of the bottle a beautiful warm sable with a very thick and rather persistent tan head. Aroma has roast malt, chocolate and coffee notes with a hint of caramel. Smoky flavor builds on a roast malt core with coffee, semi-sweet chocolate and caramel plus a hint of horehound. Smooth, firm texture is quite fizzy and lively. Boatswain or bunny, it’s a good choice.

Not particularly remarkable, but certainly drinkable. I was a little weirded out by the bottle design, but the pour is more roasty than chocolatey, which I enjoyed. Decent for the small price tag.
