2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Rhinelander Boatswain Chocolate Stout, 650mL bottle, Trader Joe’s Roswell. Black pour, brown head. Aroma of cocoa powder. Tastes of dark chocolate, unsweetened cocoa powder, coffee, and caramel. Finishes with a creamy, milk caramel flavor with coffee liquor mixed in. Really, not all that enjoyable. It is a decent Chocolate Stout, considering the source of the beer.

Pours black with a nice frothy head. Head disappears into a fine cream. The aroma is chocolate, a little yeasty and doughy, a touch sour. Beer is a touch tangy with a frothy mouthfeel. Tastes of semi sweet chocolate surrounds this beer. A little light on body and carbonation compared to other stouts, but the rich flavors make this a taste beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz. bottle poured into a standard pint glass. This is the Rhinelander Chocolate Bunny Stout with the exact same label as pictured here. Pours a dark brown with a creamy, tan, two finger head that fades within a few minutes and leaves a slight lacing. Aroma is chocolate and malt with hints of coffee and caramel. Not faint, but not very strong either. Taste is cocoa and roasted coffee with hints of maple syrup and molasses. Finishes with a decent hoppy bitterness. Body is on the lighter-medium side with a slight creamy texture. Carbonation is a tad heavy and stings the tounge and mouth. Nice long finish of cocoa and hops. Overall a decent chocolate stout. Certainly nothing ground breaking, but far from bad. I only paid $2.99 for the 22oz at Keg Liquors in Clarksville, Indiana, so definitely worth the price.

22 ounce bottle. Boatswain chocolate stout from Trader Joe’s. Opague brown, black color topped by a thick, creamy tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate with subtle roasted, smoked almonds. Rich cappuccino malt flavor, sweet cocoa and dried fruit. Light bodied for a stout, creamy with very little carbonation. Some herbal hops in finish.

Pour is dark brown with mild tan-brown head. Aroma is sweet coffee with smoky-barley flavor, mild chocolate notes. Taste is sweet, more syrup than expected, but has nice light bitter ending. Mild carbonation, slick somewhat oil like mouth feel overall. Good beer, one or two at a time max

Bottle from Trader Joes. Great beer!! Very malty aroma. Taste of malt and some chocolate. Mouthfeel was light and smooth. Overall very good. I will buy this again! Definately worth more than the $1.99 I paid for a 22oz bottle!

Two aliases later I find the right page. Bottle. Black with a thin creamy yellowish tan head. Smells like cocoa powder and caramel with some floral vanilla notes. Tastes of cocoa powder caramel and candy sweet vanilla. A bit too sweet for me.

A $2 chocolate stout? Long live Trader Joe’s of Williamsburg, Virginia! 22 oz bottle poured into a tumbler pint glass.
A: Pours a surprisingly thick looking dark burgundy color with faint hints of light coming through. The head is a rather fizzy one finger tan color with low retention and underwhelming texture. Very little lacing.
S: Actually fairly solid. It has a nice roasted malt and coffee profile, but only a hint of chocolate. I didn’t expect Choklat (at all), so it’s not really disappointing.
T: It doesn’t have a huge chocolate presence...rather, it’s strong with coffee and roast. Light fruity tones also exist on the back end, with some light hoppiness. You can kind of tell that the brewers cut corners here and there - it has a bit of an unrefined macro lager-esque grain profile, only roasted - but this isn’t nasty or undrinkable. I could see myself easily finishing the bomber, and I think I will.
M: Thin bodied and a little watery, with a bone dry finish and moderately strong carbonation. I hate to use the "it drinks like a porter" spiel...but it drinks like a porter. At least its very drinkable.
O: Not bad at all! If this were a $7 bomber, I’d kvetch and whine about this being a failure of a chocolate stout, but considering it was $2, I’d say this is a shockingly decent dark beer.
