Black with lasting light brown head. Quite pleasant roasty. Cocoa. Probably the best of the Rhinelander/Minhas/Botswain beers I’ve had, which doesn’t say much, but this is pretty decent.

1 pint, 6 oz. bottle from Trader Joe’s. Nose of yeast and dark malt. Taste of dark cocoa and toast. Flavorful and sweet with limited bitterness. Enjoyable at first but not so easy to have more than one of these. My own preference would be to dial the sweetness back a notch for drink-ability. As is, it works as pleasant dessert or sipping beer.

[Bottle (650ml). As ’Boatswain Chocolate Stout’] Pours a very dark brown with a large lasting frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate along with oats and light leafy hops. Flavour of lightly roasted malt, chocolate, lactic notes and light leafy hops. Slightly watery mouthfeel and average bodied. It’s fine.

Aroma is chocolate syrup, molasses, roasted malts and vanilla. Taste is pleasant roasty malts, caramel, molasses, vanilla, and a light but well balanced bitterness. Appearance is black with a thin light brown head that retains fairly well.

Pours a dark brown color with little to no aroma. Taste is metallic mixed with watered down coco. A very faint/light malt flavor, very watered down beer. A weak flavored stout. Bottle of "Boatswain Chocolate Stout."

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a nice two finger mocha colored head, body is pitch black. Head retention was above average, started dying halfway through, lacing was average.
Smell is of bakers chocolate, chocolate malt powder, and sweet caramel malt. Hops and alcohol aren’t present.
Taste is of chocolate malt, slight cocoa powder also. Sweetness was cut by a hint of burnt metallic coffee. Hops were muted and alcohol was very light.
Mouthfeel was good for a light stout. Wish head contributed more to the body. Theres a slight chalky aftertaste.
Overall this was a decent representation of the style but nothing outstanding. There was something that tasted off but i couldn’t pinpoint that thing. Glad I tried it but its far from the best in a crowded market.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Poured from 22 oz. bottle labeled "Boatswain Chocolate Stout." Opaque, black-brown with a 4-finger brown head and very good lacing. Aroma of cocoa, chocolate, plums, prunes and roasted malt. Taste of cocoa, chocolate flavoring, plums, berries, prunes and mild roasted malt. Medium body and medium carbonation, yet with an oddly insubstantial mouthfeel. While better than the other Boatswain beers, this still falls well short of the quality stouts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
