COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head and smell of toasted coffee and light cocoa. It has a pronounced roasted coffee flavour with slightly sweet cocoa notes concluding with a subtle, well balanced, hop bitterness.

Boatswain Chocolate Stout has a thick, soapy, beige head, a very dark-brown (essentially, black) appearance, some stray, ascending bubbles appearing on the sides of the glass, and a thin lacing sheen. The aroma is of sweet, malty, dark bread, char, a touch of chocolate, and some cream. Taste is of those elements, with a mellow bitterness. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, and Boatswain Chocolate Stout finishes semi-wet and easy drinking. RJT

Merci Frank!

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2014 Oh Minhas, oh Minhas..... please let up on the sweet yeast flavors with all of your beers! I really think that with just a little work you could be producing some decent beers! I guess that making a "cheap" beer with great labeling is your schtick? Anyway, this stout is an OK beer with a decent roasted flavor on the finish and a full mouth feel. I’d have another considering the price point. Bring it camping and have some fun with it! Calgary Minhaus has great people and it’s a nice place to visit and eat but the beer taste is all too similar / average. This is my favorite of all the beers that I have tried from Minhaus. Just my honest opinion.

Pitch black colour and bitter hint of coffee make this a nice after dinner drink. Like an espresso but without the caffeine to keep you up. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber via trade. Poured a silky black under a deep beige creamy head. Aroma is odd, some bad chocolate, soy, cola, wet medium toast, sugar, some dark fruit. Body is too thin watery with average carbonation. Flavor is the same as the aroma. Meh very underwhelmed.

The aroma is malt, chocolate, coffee, bread and roasty. The color is black with a big light brown creamy head, good lacing. The taste is light bitter. The body is light to medium, the texture thin, the carbonation average. Overall not so great, watery, doesn’t really hit the mark.

Most defiantly the worst stout I’ve ever had and most likely ever will have. Has the every so awful minhas taste.

Bottle. Tasted as Rhinelander Boatswain Chocolate Stout. Dark brown-black with spongy tan head, chocolate-caramel aroma, medium carbonation, bitter chocolate taste with a hint of cherry, medium finish with bitter aftertaste. The body is a bit on the thin side. Not a bad stout but have tasted better chocolate stouts.

Picked up a bottle at Trader Joes. Pours a dark brown almost black with thin tan head that fades quickly. Pretty good chocolate aroma with a little sweet caramel hint. Taste is definitely dark chocolate with some coffee. Minimal bitterness at the end. Not overly sweet. A little to thin. Would like it to have some more body. Pretty good sweet stout but not amazing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From the 750 ml. bottle obtained from a Trader Joe’s. I had to bounce around B before I could find the right beer to review! This beer starts out promising with its dark brown pour and lingering tan head. I will give it that. The aroma does emit some chocolate malt character and butter but the cocoa powder seems to jump forward more than anything else. Low hop note. Light to medium body. I pick up some milk chocolate in the taste and a more bitter finish than I anticipated after the nose but it still smells like someone sprinkled Nestle Cocoa Powder into the beer.
