0.5 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
Save your time and money. The beer is horrible. It’s cheap for a reason. No quality. The boatswain chocolate is watery dish-water. Sure, one can buy this from Trader Joe’s for a low price, but really, what you get is nothing on par to quality. I’d rather put the extra money towards a pint or six pack of something more proven and worthwhile. This beer is made cheap for a reason and its to sell out. The owners, both non brew-masters by the way, just some trust fund rich kids, are slinging this dishwater to steal your money. I mean go on the website, it shows the guy walking out of his Escalade SUV and the interviews with him and the sister "co-owner" show the trust fund babies they are...both siblings are narcissistic and ridiculous. I would give this a zero rating if could.

This beer costs three dollars a bomber and is remarkably terrible. These are the two things you need to know. It is actually a really, really good looking beer. It has a huge, thick head and tons of lace on an opaque black body. Honestly, a stout cannot look better--and it is kind of hard to imagine it tasting all that much worse. This is all kinds of oxidized and oddly smokey and phenolic tasting. It oddly oily and flat on the palate. There is supposedly some chocolate in this but I am not getting it trhough all the oxidized malts. This is legitimately gag inducing. I drank a six month old Indian malt liquor last night that was easier to drink--and if you know me, you know I am not kidding about that. Avoid this beer at all costs unless you need the tick then buy away, brave ticker!

"Much better than the "double ipa". pleasant aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, malt balls, touch of hops. a little thin on the feel, but not bad. looks good...black with big fluffy tan/brown head. flavor at times is as nice as the aroma, but then you get a hint of vegetal flavors that throw it off just a bit. Subtle, but there. If not for that I’d actually buy this again. As it is probably a one timer..."

Left in our fridge by someone: Pours dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is milk chocolate and coffee. Taste is not too sweet. Quite chocolatey. Nice mild coffee notes. Light roast throughout. Quite a good beer for Minhas.

Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a pint glass and a mug. Basically the same in both glasses.
The appearance was a dark brown color close to black with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace leaving some light lacing sticking around the glass.
The smell had a slight roasty coffee to sweet chocolate malt running really tight together.
The taste was mainly the same thing with a slight roasty caramel showing a side note to the flavor.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was semi - smooth leading into a fair amount of malty notes over my tongue.
Overall, I say this was a decent stout, probably could have another go at this.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled as Boatswain Chocolate Stout from Trader Joe’s. It poured dark brown with a little bit of head and foamy, soapy, tan-colored lace. The aroma was exactly as fairly average as chocolate stout goes; there was malt, coffee, chocolate. The flavor was the same, although the coffee was dominant over the other flavors, and there was a little bit of hop burn on the back end. Not an amazing or unique chocolate stout, but not a bad one.
