3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 NJBeerman013 (1032) - Hamilton Twp., New Jersey, USA - JAN 30, 201322 oz Bottle. Pours opaque black/brown with a thin cocoa head. There is a touch of cocoa in the aroma, but more roasted coffee than anything. Same for the flavor. Good, but I was expecting better cocoa flavor and less coffee.

Pours pitch black small tan head, some minor lace. Smells malty, but mostly like sweet chocolate. Tastes sweet and a little bitter, but mainly sweet malt.

22oz bottle in a snifter. Pours black with a lacy, tan head. Aroma of a stout that has gone bad just before the addition of fake chocolate. Flavor the same with a weird bitterness at the end. Average texture. No thanks.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 yesyouam (1016) - Fairport, New York, USA - MAY 5, 2013
Boatswain Chocolate Stout is a black ale with a slightly reddish cast. The smooth, dense, brown head has decent retention. It has a roasted aroma with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and toffee. It feels smooth and full bodied with a clean, dry finish. A little grit is left on the teeth. There’s a hint of sweetness, but it’s dry overall. The chocolate flavor is very dark and pretty subtle. There’s a bit of caramel going on mid-taste. The chocolate is probably most prominent in the dusty aftertaste. The bitterness is very subdued and is just enough to balance things out. This is a very solid, drinkable and enjoyable stout.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 shadey (1756) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - MAY 2, 2013
Boatswain chocolate stout. 650ml bottle. I can smell the chocolate before even bringing the glass to my nose. Dark color. Aroma is roasty and dark chocolate. Almost a burnt flavor. Sharp carbonation.Different. Odd mix, but tastey.

22oz bottle: pours a mostly opaque black with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Has a lightly sweet toasted caramel and cocoa nose. Starts with average fullness and light carbonation with mild caramel malty sweetness and a healthy dose of grassy bittering hops before a slightly sugary bittersweet finish. Could be a little more well-balanced and complex.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 GIJOE (127) - Monterey, California, USA - APR 26, 2013
Marketed as Boatswain for Trader Joe’s.
Strong cocoa nose that dominates, nearly masking the malt.
Sweet flavor - almost too sweet for me. It would be good with dessert.
Creamy mouth-feel. Mild carbonation.
Pretty standard chocolate stout. Nothing spectacular.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 tympanic (131) - New York, New York, USA - APR 13, 2013
From Trader Joe’s, sold as Boatswain Chocolate Stout. Here in NYC, we have the excellent Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, which I consider the standard for the style. This brew comes nowhere near that standard in richness of flavor, alcohol content (I want more), or robustness of palate. The previous sentence is under review. It was $2.29.
2.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 BucannonXC5 (557) - San Diego, California, USA - APR 10, 2013
Type: 22-oz. bomber
Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $1.99
Purchased: April 4, 2013
Consumed: April 6, 2013
Misc.: N/A
Poured a pitch black color with 1-2 fingers of brown head. Light foamy, foggy lacing on the sides. Good retention all the way down.
Smelled dark cocoa, coffee beans, butter and smoky firewood, almost an ashtray.
Got a sharp taste of extremely bitter coffee notes right away. That bitterness lingered on the tongue for quite some time. Still dark cocoa and that smoky fire and ashtray.
Full-to-medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average-to-lively (above average) carbonation. Long, bitter finish.
A bit too smoky, but it was actually better than I thought it would be. And for $1.99 what more can I ask for?

Bomber bought from Trader Joe's for $1.99. Pours a very dark town with a quickly dissipating tan head. Chocolate roastiness in both aroma and flavor. A bit thin for a stout but pretty good overall.
