This beer pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head and smell of toasted coffee and light cocoa. It has a pronounced roasted coffee flavour with slightly sweet cocoa notes concluding with a subtle, well balanced, hop bitterness.

Pours black with a tan head. Chocolate, caramel and malt aroma. Chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, caramel and dark fruit flavor. Medium light body and average carbonation. Flavor seems a bit off. Caramel and roasted malt finish.

Bottle. First off, I love chocolate and I love chocolate beers. This one was "Boatswain Chocolate Stout" from Trader Joe’s. Deep, dark brown almost black. No head. Aroma was burnt grains and chocolate. Taste was bitter dark chocolate, coffee and roasted grains. Nice.

For the price you can’t do better. Seriously, I challenge you do find a better chocolate stout for $2.39 in the Pacific Northwest. Taste is very heavy on the chocolate, somewhat similar to Rogue’s offering, but honestly I like this one better. Carbonation is light, which is fitting for this beer. I didn’t bother to poor it, just swigged it right out the bomber. A fine beer for the price.

Bottle at Dad’s for the half marathon tasting. Pours a deep brown to black with a thin tan head. Roast and cocoa on the nose, soft dusty chocolate. Medium bodied, light spicy chocolate. Soft cocoa, nice maltiness. A bit papery into the finish. Slow chocolate.

Bottle as "Boatswain Chocolate Stout." Pours near black with a beige head. Chocolate sweetness, mild roasted malts, and some odd light bitterness. Not horrible.

22 oz. bottle, given to me by Ian. Pitch black color, with a big, dark brown head. Nose is bitter chocolate, molasses, cinnamon, and some light anise. Sweet and malty, with a reasonable bitterness. Long, bitter aftertaste. Medium to heavy body, very syrupy and sticky. This is a fair stout; lacks some complexity, and is a little too bitter.

Bomber bought as Boatswain Chocolate Stout from Trader Joe’s. Poured into a pint glass, jet black with a mocha colored head which lasted longer than average with a nice lacing.Taste of chocolate, cocoa, sweet roasted malt, prunes, caramel and vanilla. Medium body and low carbonation, an affordable chocolate stout.

(aka:Boatswain Chocolate Stout from "Trader Joe’s") Cocoa aroma. Solid black with slim tan head. Mild coffee taste but the cocoa dominates. Smooth dry finish with a touch of sweetness.

Very lean and seems to be a character of this brewery. Good cocoa and some roast in nose. The good side of this brewery not putting much too forward is that the typical harshness associated with this style is not there.
