COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head and smell of toasted coffee and light cocoa. It has a pronounced roasted coffee flavour with slightly sweet cocoa notes concluding with a subtle, well balanced, hop bitterness.

Pours black with a tan head. Chocolate, caramel and malt aroma. Chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, caramel and dark fruit flavor. Medium light body and average carbonation. Flavor seems a bit off. Caramel and roasted malt finish.

From Trader Joe’s as the "Boatswain" label. Its cheap..its not very good. Pours nearly solid black with small tan head. The aroma was yeasty and malt, with only a hint of chocolate. The taste had some chocolate , but It definitely had some other strange flavors coming through. Like a fake plastic version of the real thing, and some earthy notes. It tried hard to be a good beer, but just didnt pull it off. Its drinkable.. but thats about it.

Ok and affordable chocolate stout. Not the top tier obviously but most certainly an enjoyable beer.

Bottle from trader Joe’s. Pours black, thick tan head. Scent roasty and chocolaty. Taste is dark chocolate, sweetness and a little black cherry flavor. Tasty beer, especially for $2.

I picked this up at Trader Joe’s under the "Boatswain" label. Its pretty darn affordable, but there’s a lot better out there. The aroma was mostly yeasty/malty and the palate had some cocoa, but I prefer the kind of chocolate flavors that come from the roast of the malt rather than the added flavors.

Very dry from the cocoa powder, otherwise decent stout overall. Solid if simple. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bottle - Picked up a bomber of this while at Trader Joe’s. This was a pretty bad attempt at a stout, let alone a chocolate stout. The aroma starts out with some V-8 juice, light metallic notes with some basic really light coffee aroma. Flavor suffers the same fate as the aroma, just an awful messy beer with a fake chocolate syrup like flavor, but even that was very light and chalky. Blech.

Save your time and money. The beer is horrible. It’s cheap for a reason. No quality. The boatswain chocolate is watery dish-water. Sure, one can buy this from Trader Joe’s for a low price, but really, what you get is nothing on par to quality. I’d rather put the extra money towards a pint or six pack of something more proven and worthwhile. This beer is made cheap for a reason and its to sell out. The owners, both non brew-masters by the way, just some trust fund rich kids, are slinging this dishwater to steal your money. I mean go on the website, it shows the guy walking out of his Escalade SUV and the interviews with him and the sister "co-owner" show the trust fund babies they are...both siblings are narcissistic and ridiculous. I would give this a zero rating if could.

This beer costs three dollars a bomber and is remarkably terrible. These are the two things you need to know. It is actually a really, really good looking beer. It has a huge, thick head and tons of lace on an opaque black body. Honestly, a stout cannot look better--and it is kind of hard to imagine it tasting all that much worse. This is all kinds of oxidized and oddly smokey and phenolic tasting. It oddly oily and flat on the palate. There is supposedly some chocolate in this but I am not getting it trhough all the oxidized malts. This is legitimately gag inducing. I drank a six month old Indian malt liquor last night that was easier to drink--and if you know me, you know I am not kidding about that. Avoid this beer at all costs unless you need the tick then buy away, brave ticker!

Bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and cocoa. Flavor was chocolatey with roasted malts, mild coffee, cocoa powder and a touch of toffee.
