2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
while quite approachable their is very little in this beer that stands out. It pours an opaque black with a toasted tan head. A heavily roasted taste with a sweet finish to it, the chocolate taste does not really show itself, throughout drinking.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Sampled at the SCCCT event at Friendship Brewery. Bottle was labeled as Boatswain Chocolate Stout. It poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma was of malts, chocolate, coffee, bread and some roast. The taste was similar to the aroma with more malts, chocolate, coffee, bread and roast. A little watery for me.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Purchased under Boatswain Chocolate Stout at Trader Joe in Vegas. Pours a real dark brown colour with a frothy beige head, long lasting with creamy lacing. Chocolate malt aromas with the cacao added. Some stronger hops than usual for this style. Eventually, nutty notes comes out with mild coffee. Some sweetness flavours from the chocolate with roasted malts and light bitterness in the finish. This chocolate stout is a little too sweet, rich overall. Started with a lot of hops for the style, but now has disappeared in the taste.

Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, cocoa/chocolate, & some coffee; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, coffee, chocolate, and some caramel; Finish is slightly bitter; Somewhat artificial sweetener taste to it - but not too bad.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Joy of Joys! The third in the dart tournament contest. A solid chocolate stout. Sweet and full bodied. Nose of cacao and bakers chocolate. Subtle hop finish for me. Evidently aliased to Trader Joe’s. Especially economical.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
650 ML bottle from Trader Joes; labeled as "Boatswain Chocolate Stout." $2.49 for this big bottle. Aroma: Cocoa powder is most prevalent along with some very light roasty notes; it’s fairly one dimensional all around but not offensive. Appearance: Thin, dark garnet brown pour with a sticky mocha head that settles into a creamy skin. Flavor: More caramel than cocoa up front, and all around; anything resembling cocoa or roast character is dialed back; the finish dries up well. Palate: Light body, slick texture, soft carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: It’s pretty unimpressive, but not undrinkable, either. Of course, it’s a bargain, and probably best reserved for those moments when you need a quick stout fix, or you are far enough into your drinking session for flavor and execution not to matter much anymore.
