2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Aroma of citrus, taste is overly malty, malt, malt, and way to much malt. Needs much more balance.

1.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 3/20
22 oz bottle into a Chimay goblet.
A: Pours a semi-hazy amber color. The head is a finger high, off-white in shade, and VERY fluffy soft. Retention isnít very good, though. Having said that, it leaves some lacing on the glass. Well...um...it looks like a DIPA.
S: Hops? Whatís that? Could have fooled me thinking this was well-hopped...or any kind of hopped, really. Honestly, it smells like a fuckiní malt liquor. Cereal grains, cheap white wine, and lots of sweetness are the order of the day. If my name was Pablo or DeAndre, Iíd probably like this a lot. If it was in a 40, ditto. Too bad neither of those things are true, so FAIL.
(I apologize to all craft beer enthusiasts named Pablo or DeAndre. Seriously, racial stereotyping is amusing in small doses, but can quickly turn ugly, especially if it happens on the internets. Wait...)
T: Oh god, this might be even worse. The best descriptor I can use is "subpar malt liquor meets horrible imperial amber ale." There is a touch of sweet caramel to start, which quickly turns into cheap white wine and cheap cereal grains. Iím also getting notes of sweat socks, cardboard, and plastic. There isnít a hint of hoppiness anywhere to be found. It doesnít even succeed as a malt liquor: Iíd much rather go for Steel Reserve or Natty Daddy over this.
M: Itís heavy, sweet, and highly carbonated. Kind of like a malt liquor, really. This kind of sweetness is absolutely unacceptable in a DIPA - it makes ST Unearthly look like a bone-dry, 4% blonde ale.
O: I love how the bottle top said "craft beer", as if it was soullessly harping on the fact that "yes, weíre just like Sierra Nevada, and really cheap, too!", preferably in a Hindi accent. It resembles a proper craft DIPA much in the same way I resemble Idris Elba. Sure, weíre both human beings, both male, and thatís where the similarities end. This beer has set a record: not only is it my lowest scored DIPA (by a HUGE margin), but it has the lowest ratio of portion drunk to portion drainpoured. I just canít do it, especially when I know how sloppily manufactured its ícraftynessí is. $3 for this horrid DIPA facsimile is about $10 too much. Itís so bad, in fact, Iím close to having a BSOD moment and I donít want to default back to Cliff Richardís settings. Luckily, I didnít...this time.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a bit flat. Aroma is toffee. Flavor is toffee with no bitterness or burn whatsoever - very unusual for an imperial. Very good.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottled, labeled as "Boatswain Double IPA Twin Screw Steamer". Pours dark amber with a hint of orange and a very frothy, off white head. Slightly corny, heavy malt aroma with notes of dried straw and prairie grasses - nary a hint of hops. Flavor is decently bitter, a bit abrasive, with notes of leather and an undercurrent of biscuits and vanilla malts. Some burnt plastic in the finish. Another stinker from a crummy brewer.

2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Poured from 22 oz. bottle.
Slightly murky, orange-copper with a 1-finger cream-colored head and very good lacing.
Aroma of toffee, cane syrup, pine, citrus, tropical fruit and caramel.
Taste of cane syrup, honey, toffee, pine, citrus, dust, a hard to pin down (but unpleasant) flavor and caramel. Lots of malt, but light on the hops for a double IPA.
Medium/full body and medium/high carbonization with a slightly slimy mouthfeel.
Overall, a sorry example of what purports to be a double IPA.

1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
This pours a medium amber color with a full, beige head. The aroma is fairly malty considering itís a double IPA. The taste is sweeter than anything with lots of bready tones. Itís a lighter and drinkable beer but in no way does this even begin to compare to other IIPAs on the market.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cloudy body and small head. Bready malts, almost lactic yeast, light spice , caramel and mildly hoppy. Really, a double ipa ? Mild bitter taste, malty sweetness, amber. Boring, underdeveloped. Itís the local Belgian bullshit trippel of American IPAs. Drinkable but no reason it should exist. (Bottle brought by Flavia, thanks!)

1.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20
Bomber. Mostly clear orange copper, vanishing off-white foam. Aroma of sour citric hop and c-malt. Odd fruity tangy taste, dirty sweet caramel, no bitterness... what is this?!? Average carbonation, lighter-medium bodied, moderately hopped. NFL (Not For Lagerboys) (This will be the last offering this enthusiast samples from this sub-standard brewer, life is too short to drink shitty beer)

2.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Poured from a 22 oz bottle from Trader Joes, listed as Rhinelander Boatswain Double IPA. Poured in a Lost Abbey glass. Apricot gold with big head and lace. Aroma of wheat and bread. Medium carbonation and significant mouthfeel. Flavors of grains, earth, bitter grapefruit rind. Thereís some metallic flavors. Overall rough and not so tasty.
Iím sitting here half way through this bottle and Iím not sure I want to finish the beast, but I almost never pour out a beer. Hummm.
