Well it’s not super great, it’s quite cheap, probably the adage of you get what you pay for works for this one

Gross! From the smell to taste. Never again! Actually poured over half a bomber bottle down the drain.

Just plain ghastly. Heavy metallic and wet cardboard aromas. Absolutely no characteristics of an IPA. This disaster never should have been allowed to hit shelves, and I’m disappointed that Trader Joe’s would sell this swill.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Didn’t think this was as bad as it is getting beat up on the site. Bottle pour copper. Nose tropical fruit, bubblegum, and sweet malt. Taste big sweet malt up front, some fruit, mid palate malt candy sweetness late, some bitter in the finish. Very cloying throughout.

2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Boatswain Double IPA from Trader Joe’s. Gave it the benefit of the doubt and let it breathe in a brandy snifter for nearly an hour. Aroma ok, molasses-caramel with banana-bubblegum esters. But it drank thin with harsh bitterness. Finish was bitter and astringent. My ratings are against other strong IPAs. Definitely better than mass-market pilsneroids.

1.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
A lightly hazed amber DIPA with a thin mocha head. In aroma, very oxidized honey malt with suranated hops, orange pulp, not bad but definitely tired. In mouth, a sweet oxidized malt with grassy hops, light bilous notes, problematic. Bottle from Traders Joe on Ontario street, Chicago, in my hotel room...

1.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20
Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Heavily oxidized, completely flat. Bought fresh and consumed almost right away. Cloyingly sweet with zero hop characteristics. Maybe I had a bad bottle? I certainly hope so.

1.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
$8 shelf turd. This beer was atrocious. Aromas of marinated garlic, hop oils, and sweat. Tastes of red cabbage, pottery clay, Stevia, and sea salt. o.O

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Tallahassee, Fl - Trader Joe’s - 22 oz bomber - labeled as Boatswain Double IPA. Slightly hazy medium copper pour, very light off-white head. Aroma is muddled, hints of gumballs, artificial pine. Flavor leaves a lot to be desired, some muddled citrus bitterness, some date-like sweetness. a bit of homebrew funkiness. Mouthfeel is thick enough. This was the first "miss" of the numerous private label beers I have had at Trader Joe’s. Can’t win ’em all - especially at the low prices!
