The grand daddy of them all, Imperial Jack - robust, malty and heavily hopped. Who said "jackrabbits" donít bite?.

650 ml labeled as "Boatswain Double IPA" Aroma is pale malt, bread, sugar and a weak herbal hop. Caramel

The flavor is is as unexciting as the aroma. I feel like the flavor isnít as bad as some of the ratings lead you to believe but surely nothing anybody is going to purchased again. Caramel base, citrus and weak herbal hints with just a lot of sugar. Way to much sugar. The bitterness doesnít really come from a pronounced hop, kind of generic bitter. I guess for the price itís ok. More like a weak attempt at a homebrew.

Dark orange. Smells candy corn like. Very pale aroma. Candy corn, Malts, sugar and brown sugar. Tight resin, a lot of sweetness

650 ml bottle poured at home. Pours orange with no head. Smells like old apples. Taste has next to no carbonation and once again tastes like old apples. As many other reviews said, this is definitely not a Double IPA. Itís barely drinkable, but only because iíve had some other decent beers tonight so iím in a good mood. Could have been served at the "bad beer party" I held a couple of years ago.

Bottle at Dadís for the half marathon tasting. Pours a faintly hazed orange amber with a thin white head. Interesting on the nose, smells of banana and yeast, sticky caramel malt with a hint of hops behind it. Medium bodied, smooth and malty with more weird banana coming through. Tastes of belgian yeast. This is weird, and not in the favorable way. Long weird yeasty finish. Not a winner.

Bottle. Pours orange with a white head. Sweeter citrus notes, light bitterness that becomes moderately astringent in the finish, some pale malts, and faint metallic harshness. Not horrible, but, yeah, not good either.

Drank as Trader Joeís Boatswain Double IPA. As an American IPA, it is a solid offering. Hoppy, but not too bitter. It does not have any of the smooth malt I expect from a double IPA though.

Pours a rosey light brown with a finger of off-white foam. Nose is malt, some banana esters, and a hint of hop. Taste is a bit bitter with an astringent finish. Medium body. Lively carbonation. Itís okay. I wouldnít turn one down.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2015 Bottle from Trader Joes. Pour looks great, expectations dashed in short order. Aroma is musty and funky, taste follows with some wet paper and paste. Almost hits the mark, but falls short.

Bottle. Moderate cereal for the malt, light orange and soap for the hops and yeast. Head is average size, frothy, off-white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy medium amber orange. Flavor is lightly sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, slick with a lively carbonation and a moderately astringent finish. The mix of sweetness and astringency in the this DIPA is a little off-putting.

Bottle at Half Marathon Tasting - May 16th. Pours a bright reddish orange with thin white lacing. Aroma is spice, fruity caramel and lots of belgian characteristics - spicy fruit, banana, clove, etc. Mouthfeel is medium to soft, not abrasive really, but lots of banana and spice. Some metal as well. $2 beer?
