The grand daddy of them all, Imperial Jack - robust, malty and heavily hopped. Who said "jackrabbits" donít bite?.

Bottle in KC picked up at Trader Joes. Pours a dark orange appearance with a light, cream colored head. Light mineral, bland bready, cracker malty aroma. Somewhat soapy, light citrusy, a bit dry, tangy, bready flavor. Not overly offensive but quite boring and little hops to suggest itís a Double IPA.

Bomber. Mostly clear orange copper, vanishing off-white foam. Aroma of sour citric hop and c-malt. Odd fruity tangy taste, dirty sweet caramel, no bitterness... what is this?!? Average carbonation, lighter-medium bodied, moderately hopped. NFL (Not For Lagerboys) (This will be the last offering this enthusiast samples from this sub-standard brewer, life is too short to drink shitty beer)

Bomber bottle to glass. Cloudy amber pour. Very easy drinking. Balanced, mellow IPA. An ale, slightly nutty finish. Medium carbonation. The ABV is pretty subtle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a 22 oz bottle from Trader Joes, listed as Rhinelander Boatswain Double IPA. Poured in a Lost Abbey glass. Apricot gold with big head and lace. Aroma of wheat and bread. Medium carbonation and significant mouthfeel. Flavors of grains, earth, bitter grapefruit rind. Thereís some metallic flavors. Overall rough and not so tasty. Iím sitting here half way through this bottle and Iím not sure I want to finish the beast, but I almost never pour out a beer. Hummm.

Knowing what I was getting into I still picked up a bottle of this from the local Trader Joeís. Marketed under the Boatswain label, it does nothing to mask the sheer mediocrity of the contents. Fresh or aged I have to imagine that this tastes pretty much the same - a bland boring double IPA that is a pale shadow of the real thing. The only reason to purchase one is for a tick.

Aroma / Appearance - A warm bronze semitransparent base and clean white head look simple enough. The malty scent of orange marmalade and complete lack of resiny hops immediately betray the flaws of this forgettable beer. Even the citrus feels more caramelly than bright and open.

Flavor / Palate - Malts, orange peels, and caramel chews taste more like a glass of past-its-prime IPA than a desirable double IPA. Timid hops rise up from time to time but then immediately fade. A shadow of the real thing, this beer tastes like the second runnings of a recipe made by the book. At least at less than $3.99 a bomber you are not out too much money when you pour half of it down the nearest drain.

Poured from the double deuce into a pint glass. I guess you can just write whatever you want on a label and then put whatever you want into the bottle. The only consistency I see here is the commercial description says "grand daddy of them all" My grand daddy used to drink rhinelander, but since if he were alive today heíd be 106 years old I doubt heíd be shopping at Trader Joes, he would think it was an over priced tool of communism. Heís probably right.

Bomber bottle. Pours a hazy reddish amber with a non-existant head. Moderate carbonation. Negligible tin-ish aroma. Taste: Sweet. very mild hop flavour but almost no bitterness to speak of. Finish: Sweet malts, with a tin-like tone. This beer is not an IPA, never mind a double IPA. I donít think it would qualify as an american pale ale or anything remote to that category.

Save your time and money. The beer is horrible. Itís cheap for a reason. No quality. ALL THE BEER is watery dish-water. Sure, one can buy this from Trader Joeís for a low price, but really, what you get is nothing on par to quality. Iíd rather put the extra money towards a pint or six pack of something more proven and worthwhile. This beer is made cheap for a reason and its to sell out. The owners, both non brew-masters by the way, just some trust fund rich kids, are slinging this dishwater to steal your money. I mean go on the website, it shows the guy walking out of his Escalade SUV and the interviews with him and the sister "co-owner" show the trust fund babies they are...both siblings are narcissistic and ridiculous. I would give this a zero rating if could.

Bottle. Hazy amber orange pour with a few fingers of foamy off white head. Aroma is fairly tropical, grapefruit and orange. Taste is milder fruit, Overall not a lot of bitterness or hops in this one.

To call this a double ipa is questionable at best. It has low hop aroma and bitterness. Thereís more malt flavor but it is nice and crisp, other than that itís boring.
