Trader Joes Boatswain HLV bottle. Big malts with nice slight bitter hoppiness. Almost barrel aged quality to it. Kind of surprised. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Trader Joe’s H.L.V bought at the new store in Pittsford, NY. Great bargain...or is it? It certainly looks good and leaves fine lacing, and it is not flavorless. But I don’t think it all comes together. Too much bitterness: a combination of roastiness and high IBUs. Not enough malt underneath. Maybe could have used a better base malt.

Poured from a large bottle into a pint glass to drink. The beer had a dark amber-copper color with a medium off-white foamy head that had low retention and cling, but good lacing. It featured a dark fruit and floral aroma with compliments of earthy and grainy hops, and touches of raisins and molasses. Its taste was lightly sweet and fruity with pleasant touches of dark fruit and raisin, and only a slight bitterness. Its body was somewhat what and a bit creamy, but a little bit on the thin side with lower carbonation. Definitely a quality beer, but a bit short of high levels.

Bottle labeled HLV. Clear medium brown with a creamy off white head. Soda pop biscuit and light chocolate aroma. Bright citrusy medium to full bodied velvety palate. Tastes of caramel soda and chocolate with a cocoa powder taste to the finish and a light nuttiness. Not bad.

Poured from bomber I picked up for $2, not a bad price but I have a feeling why it’s this cheap, pours a dark brownish red with an off white head and lacing, aroma is sweet with a hint of dark fruit and caramel, the flavor has some dark fruit and plum on the front end with a sweetness of caramel and malt, not good by any means but tastes better than I was expecting.

Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of toffee, toasted malt, earthiness, light dark fruit and a hint of smoke. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of toffee, toasted malt, earthiness, light dark fruit and a hint of smoke with a crisp dry lingering toffee finish.

Bottle, labeled as Boatswain Heavy Lifter at Trader Joe’s. Weird beer, like an amber/brown mix--both in color and style. A bit hoppy, but pretty cloyingly malty sweet. Not very well carbonated. Not exciting at all.

Mohogany pour with a tan head. Aroma is sweet malt. Taste is a little metallic, roasted malt, sweet , and a little nutty.
