3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from 22 oz. bottle.
Opaque, very dark brown with small khaki head and very good lacing.
Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit, raisins, dates, vanilla, grain, caramel and a hint of earthy hops.
Taste of toasted sweet dark malt, dark fruits, alcohol, nuts, vanilla, toffee, grain, caramel and peat. A lot going on here. Despite the significant smokey and dark flavors, the overall effect is bright and fruity, not dark and brooding.
Medium/light body and low carbonation. The lighter body seems to fit well with the dark yet bright flavors.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Pours a hazy dark brown with lots of light brown head. Aroma is sweet and consists of caramel malt, toffee, brown sugar, nuts and a bit of breadiness. Taste is very sweet and unique but not in a good way. It is as if many sweet items were jammed together with chemicals and this is the result. I don’t like it and found myself struggling to finish my first glass so I poured the remaining half of the bomber down the drain. It tastes a little better than Nyquil but that is about the only thing. This is the first and last beer I will have from this brewery.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: OCT 9, 2014 Thanks to Glyn, who picked this up in his travels. The bottle I had was labeled Boatswain Heavy Lifter - some MIlwaukee brewery I haven’t heard of before. I also had this under the name Trader Joe’s/Rhinelander Boatswain Ale The aroma starts off yeasty, but gets better. Big, foamy head on a dark pour. The flavor is chocolate malt and pumpernickel, with a dash of yeast, and there are hops in the finish. It was worth the budget price at Trader Joe’s.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours an amber orange with thick off-white head, decent lacing. Aroma of herbal and citrus hops, strong toasted malt backbone, slight nutty character, caramel, and very slight bread. Flavor matches well and you can definitely count me in the pleasantly surprised category. For less than $2, this would be hard to beat.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber from Trader Joe’s Bakersfield labeled Boatswain Heavy Lift Vessel Ale. Nose is pecans, caramel, biscuit, and sweetness. Clear brown with a big, lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, nutty, and a hint of bitter, smoke, and licorice. Pretty decent brown ale especially considering the buck ninety nine pricepoint!
